I can imagine a situation where the cops use "restraint," and the "child" (is he 12, 14, 16 or . . .?) makes use of the time to shoot and kill an innocent bystander strolling by before the area can be controlled.

Think the cops would get a pass on THAT one? I can already hear the second-guessing.

America is exceptional. This is what happens when young kids try to emulate thug culture and gun culture. They look up to the rappers, drug dealers and hard asses. This kid was just doing what every kid does: Pick a hero and try to be like them. It got him killed. Not the cop's fault OR the kid's fault. This is a symptom of a sick country with too many guns and shitty thug culture.

I have no problems looking at this situation based on it's own merits. You have a kid with a fake gun that looks real. The kid behaved in a way that caused a citizen to call the police, fearing he would use it. When the police arrived, they shot him after continuing to fear he would use the gun.

Moral of the story, you don't go out in public brandishing a firearm. It's a pretty fucking simple moral.

I can quarterback what the cops did just like everyone else can, but in the end, I don't hate on them because they had to do what at the time they felt was necessary to do to protect the public.

If people have problems with that and think it's ridiculous, you go get a badge and do a better job.

You don't think there's something wrong when we have to tell kids "Don't play with toy guns, that policeman might shoot you."?

No..its always been this way. Draw a weapon on a cop, you get killed.

Stop acting like this is a crisis or even something new.

That and people seem to be ignoring the fact this this kid, or someone else, chose to scrape away the only thing that made this "toy" identifiable as such.

They wanted it to look more real. Sadly in this case whomever did it succeeded with tragic results.

It's always been the way that policemen have shot children for playing with toy guns?

No one said they can't play with them. They just can't do it in public.

Maybe you can sort out some sort of CCW for toy guns.

I remember when I was 10 years old and younger, my cousin and I would run around the neighborhood with toy guns..fighting the pretend army. I can guarantee that I had enough respect for authority (including parental authority) that if someone told me to drop my toy guns I would have done so immediately and even had the knowledge that someone might not think my guns were fake.

These were very bulky/plasticky guns that were clearly toys.

I would have never ran around with a realistic replica though. I had a friend with a .BB that looked like 1911. That was the PRIZED gun because it was so realistic. I would have NEVER imagined running around a neighborhood (where nobody knew who I was) pulling that out and pointing it at people.

Rule #1 treat all firearms as if they are real firearms and always loaded
Rule #2 never point a firearm at something you aren't willing to shoot at

Heard the phone call and the woman states, "it's probably fake but it's scaring the hell out of people." Just in case, unload on that little thug!

No win for the cops, like usual. If it's a real gun, the cop's shot. If it's fake, this tragedy. But let the Monday morning quarterbacking continue.

I just can't imagine why they approached this situation in a way that would have to go down like this. At least get a ballistic shield and start to approach him that way. Since it wasn't a real gun, there is ZERO chance it came out as an "Active shooter", because NO shots could have been fired.

Get everyone around him to GTFO and single him out if he is being a little ass and doesn't want to listen to you. Get a ballistic shield wall and approach if you don't have any cover at all.

If you have NO advantage whatsoever...just wait him out from cover until he comes to you.

If you approach someone with a gun, and you don't have the advantage, that exponentially increases the chance you will have to make a choice to discharge a weapon to protect life.

From having airsoft guns pulled on me before, you have no choice to believe they are real. It's a terrible feeling to have thinking "A bullet is going to come out of there, and it's going to split my head apart"

Take your time. Be Patient. No lives are being lost, so use that as an advantage to try and make sure EVERYONE goes home safe

HOLY WTF BBQ!!! You want to call out SWAT now? And think that is somehow a better solution? Pro-tip, regular patrol cops don't carry fancy shit like ballistic shields around with them. Those are specialty equipment for specialty situations.

They should have brightly colored, obviously TOY guns instead of Airsoft, then there is no need for these concerns. Not even the dumbest pig is going to mistake a Nerf or SuperSoaker for an actual firearm.

Cops sometimes get in the mentality that they have to solve the crime right then and there, so they get hemmed up in a situation where a little patience and prudence could help. I.E. you have a psycopath in the 2nd floor of a house and you got to get him for whatever reason...if no lives are in immediate danger, make sure you get a reasonable amount of resources together before making a decision to act.

Don't EVER give in to a criminal when they have the upper hand and you have the option to negate that. Obviously you don't call out a SWAT unit for every stupid thing, but when it comes to confronting a person KNOWN to be armed, that changes everything. Wait for that 2nd or 3rd officer. Wait for that supervisor to get on scene with a shield. Wait for the person who has the less lethal option.

LMAO, 'he hasn't shot anyone yet, just keeps pointing at them. Lets just sit here and hope he continues to not shoot...' How well does that go over when it turns out to be a real gun and the kid blows another kid away?

Here is the only question that really need to be asked: Would you rather see a cop or a child shot?
Personally, I think that it is the cops duty to protect and serve, and that means taking some risks. The police need to be a lot less trigger happy. Shooting first is not the proper response in every situation.

Riiight. And then when some kids break into a house and get shot by a homeowner, unarmed or otherwise, this place can't stop falling over itself to justify the shooting in the name of safety first.
