Hey all, just wanting to get some suggestions as to the problem my Uncle is experienceing. Normally I would just call him on the phone and walk him through it.. but he runs winME (which I have NEVER even wanted to try). I am guessing most of the operations are the same as 98 with a mix of 2000 thrown in for good measure. I am suspecting the culprit to be the autodial option being enabled in the Internet settings. But I'm not sure what prog is trying to access the internet. At first I thought it was Win update, but then remembered it doesn't try to call if not inet connection is there. Anyway here is his lovely very descripive email below. I am thinking that deleting all of his dial-up network connections and disabling the "autodial" option in Inet Settings would solve this random dialing. however, it would not stop whatever task is being run every "few minutes". Thanks for the suggestions!!

==========================

Without my asking, and whatever I do with my computer--even when I first turn it on--a page pops up telling me it is going to provide a revision to my Windows, then it dials, without my askinlg, a number which I don't have (I no longer have Juno Web), and I then must cancel it. It pops up every few minutes and begins to dial. I don't know how to shut it off.

What kind of computer is it? Compaq, HP, Homebuilt? Some computers, Compaqs especially have a ton of 'support' software that runs in the background. This is what it sounds like. Usually, it ends up that all of that extra background software slows the computer down to a crawl, which is why they're basically worthless.

Delete the Juno Web Connection, and goto Explorer and click connect through LAN.

Tell him to make sure he's dialed in before he tries to use internet explorer or his email.

That's the simplest way to tell that software to stuff it.

It's probably best to run msconfig and see if you can identify the rogue program there. Take the tick out of the box and restart. That should put an end to it.

Even if you disallowed autodial you will still get a DUN box popping up that he'll have to deal with. To get rid of it Start>Settings>Control Panel (may have to expand it in ME)>Internet Options>Connections> then put the dot in "Always dial my default connection"

You should get rid of any old DUN connections that aren't used any more. Using the wizard in Internet Options is the best way to create/recreate a DUN connection as it doesn't load useless protocols etc which will happen if you create it again from the Dial up Networking folder.
