Once upon a time, I don't use any of Windows default software, and not by principle: by actually testing out other things and seeing that they are BETTER!!!

Ok, so in this thread, I wanted to share how I found my way out of Windows Media Player and other such stuff, and into better software that makes my life easier and makes my Windows experience immensely better. I want to share my personal preferences, and get a place for other people to share theirs. So here is my list.

Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox
Download: www.getfirefox.com
Why: because Internet Explorer isn't as fast, isn't as safe, and doesn't have as many customization options. Customization is the one aspect of a browser that seriously improves your browsing experience: having a browser that does what I want, how you I it, and when you I it, that's the best thing for me. That and I'm a web developer and Firebug (one of the many extensions available for Firefox) is fantastic. And AdBlock Plus, Tab Mix Plus, NoScript, Secure Login, Stylish, Greasemonkey, et cetera et al.

Antivirus: avast!
Download: www.avast.com
Why: not Windows Defender because it's not as safe, and, in my case at least, has a much great impact on performance. I went for avast! after reading some comparisons between security and performance, and it seemed a solid solutions and it's free. I am not disappointed.

Firewall: avast!
Download: www.avast.com (paid)
Why: not Windows Firewall because it's not really good at anything. It doesn't block the stuff I want to block, and isn't nearly as consistent/safe. Besides, avast!, and other security suites, have added functions that are good for safety, and I'm more than happy with my choice.

Music player: Winamp
Download: winamp.en.softonic.com (official site is down)
Why: because Windows Media Player doesn't have as good a sound, isn't as pretty (in my opinion) or as good at managing my music library, and is way slower and heavier. I've grown up listening to music on Winamp, but I know there are better players out there, Foobar, for example, has better sound quality. AIMP is apparently better than Winamp at many things. But I stick with Winamp because that's what I know and it does everything I want it to do, and well. It has shoutcast as well, which is nice.

Video player: Media Player Classic - Home Cinema
Download: mpc-hc.org
Why: because it's fast, very powerful, and reads everything I throw at it. I tried other solutions because Media Player Classic is pretty hideous, but none were as powerful, as configurable, or as easy to use. It's a pretty fantastic piece of software. For VLC users: it's not stable, it's buggy and, if I remember correctly, it doesn't pause the video when I hit the spacebar and/or click the video itself... But I guess anything is better than Windows Media Player, anyway.

File Copier: Tera Copy
Download: codesector.com/teracopy
Why: because Windows' file copier is SLOW, it doesn't have a pause function (at least in Windows 7) and other very useful functions that Tera Copy has, and it's just all around crap. Everybody knows that, it's just that most people bear with it because they don't know there are alternatives. Well, there is, and it's called Tera Copy.

Task Manager: Process Explorer
Download: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Why: because it works! Unlike Windows' task manager. It's Microsoft software too, which is... well, irrelevant, but just saying. It works perfectly, way WAY more powerful than even Windows 8's "upgraded" task manager (that's still pretty abysmal), and actually shuts down applications without asking them "please will you shut down, yes? Is that all right?"... Task Manager is a must have for me.

Autorun configurator: Autoruns
Download: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Why: this one is opposed to Microsoft's msconfig.exe's function of managing the software that runs on Windows start up. And it's just so much more. It's great (though not infalible) at finding adware that starts with Windows, and it's just better, because it sees all, and not just some of the software that runs on startup.

Picture viewer: Picasa
Download: picasa.google.com
Why: because I haven't found anything as nice or better. It's miles ahead of windows' default software, with the big fault of not handling animated GIFs (which doesn't bother me too much). It's great as a picture gallery handler, and the image viewer AND image editor are both powerful, fast and easy to use. It's really a nice piece of software, although I suspect there are even better alternatives. I just haven't found them yet.

Notepad: Metapad
Download: liquidninja.com/metapad
Why: because notepad sucks. Metapad is miles ahead, even though I couldn't really understand how that was possible... well, that was before I tried it. It's a simple text editor, so there's no code highlighting or anything (I use Dreamweaver for that), but it's faster and more powerful (if uglier) than Notepad, and I love it. Of course if you don't open simple text files a lot, notepad will do just fine, but Metapad will still be better for you.

MS Paint: Paint.net
Download: www.getpaint.net
Why: there are times when Photoshop is not the best software for the image editing. For example, when you just need a fast quick dirty job and don't want to open a huge image editor. MS Paint is usually there for you. Thing it is: it's terrible at everything it does. Its editing functions are terrible, its saving functions are terrible, and its file compatibility is terrible (no transparencies, for one). Paint.net is only a bit heavier than MS Paint, and it's just as easy to use (well, easier, actually, if you count Windows 7/8's MS paint and its crappy ribbon interface). It has all the functions you need and more, including image layers, tabbed interface and loads of other stuff, and for quick and dirty, it's miles ahead.

Cleaning utility/software uninstaller: CCleaner
Download: www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Why: because Windows' Disk Cleanup isn't nearly as powerful or easy to use, and Windows' uninstall panel is terrible, if only because it doesn't let you uninstall more than one program at once, even though you usually can. I don't use Revo Uninstaller for that because it's overkill for me. But I suggest it for people why install and uninstall a lot of programs.

Widgets: Rainmeter
Download: rainmeter.net
Why: I used to hate widgets and the Windows' sidebar when they were first introduced in Windows Vista. And then I found Rainmeter. And now I don't hate them anymore, because Rainmeter handles the widgets in my desktop: they are VERY customizable, they are awesome looking, powerful, light and customizable. And did I mention that they are totally customizable? Yeah, they are...

Sound recorder: Audacity
Download: audacity.sourceforge.net
Why: well, because Windows sound recorder is pathetic. It's not even good for a quick job... Audacity is a lossless recorder, very light, and exports stuff into whatever format I want (even if it may need a downloadable library for that). It's not good for audio production, but it will do that in a tight fit. But since Windows doesn't include an application for that, that's not the issue here.

Well, and that's it for me. I'm currently looking for a tabbed windows explorer alternative, but I haven't found something I like yet, but even that I will change...

How about you?

Bravo!

My take is, most of us unearth more viable alternatives than what is loaded in Windows over time. I have arrived at some of the same you have, not all, of course, i.e., I would not trade VLC media Player for anything.

And I've dumped FX in favor of leaner and meaner Pale Moon which I could not luv more.

Morbus is a WEB DEVELOPER---and a very detail oriented one I get! Makes total sense!!!!

When I was on Windows, the only built in tool I used regularly was Explorer. Windows software is decent, especially for a one size fits all default, but there's usually something better that gives a better fit.

I'm the opposite. I once never used MS apps, now I can't think of one default app I don't use.

I agree with you about Firefox, Winamp, Process Explorer, Audacity, and that Windows 7 Copy/Transfer has it's issues. I like the XP Photo Viewer better than Windows 7 one also, and would use IrfanView in the latter. I hated MS Paint in Windows 7 because of the ribbon interface, the idea works good in Windows 7 Movie Maker though (in my opinion). I also use Sumantra PDF instead of Adobe, and generally try to avoid MS Office products, and avoid turning on Flash unless it is truly needed. This month I've been almost always booting in Slacko Puppy Linux instead of Windows, and it has pretty much everything I need now that I figured out how to get DosBox running in it. Notepad is the only one would disagree with you on, I find it easy and convenient, and I take notes with it a lot, but as you said there's other software out there that can do the same thing (like Geany in Linux).

The only 3 things I still use is task Manager, File copier and Notepad, will give yours a try, thanks. however sad to see no VLC, I don't care much about the player itself but its codec pack is awesome!

I use the K-lite code pack for codecs, and it comes with Media Player Classic, which, as I said, I use.

VLC is too clunky for me. And I simply CANNOT live with not being able to hit the spacebar to pause the video. That just won't do.

Micro$oft should partner with the above companies and include some of the apps with Windows 9. Time to bury IE, WMC and Defender.

That is especially true for Process Explorer. Why that one is not included in Windows by default is for me one of the biggest mysteries ever.

My pleasure!

You can configure key shortcuts in "Preferences".
Thanks for the tip. I'll stick with MPC-HC though, since that wasn't my only issue with VLC. I only tired it out because I found MPC-HC to be ugly (its interface, I mean), but it's sinkable, from what I can tell. I just haven't had time to mess with it yet.

MPC-HC is lighter and faster than VLC (I tried VLC back when searching had a very noticeable lag, I hear they've fixed that), and does everything I need it to do.

Again though, thanks for the tip.

Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox
Download: www.getfirefox.com
I personally find Chrome to be better, but that is partially because I've swallowed Google hook and have decided to give them all my data. The closing of Reader has made me rething this somewhat, so maybe I'll give firefox another try.

Antivirus: avast!
Download: www.avast.com

Firewall: avast!
Download: www.avast.com (paid)

Windows Security Essentials falls into the 'good enough' catagory. It does it's job decently, and stays out of my way. Also I'm tired of the biggest threat to my systems security being all the malware packaged with my AV. Also, my router has a firewall, so windows defender firewall can do the basic job of per application blocking just fine.

Music player: Winamp
Download: winamp.en.softonic.com (official site is down)
Winamp is dead. Better look for something else. Personally I love my Media Monkey.

Video player: Media Player Classic - Home Cinema
Download: mpc-hc.org
VLC for me! But both are good.

File Copier: Tera Copy
Download: codesector.com/teracopy
I used to love Tera Copy. Then it hosed 3 windows installs in a row. The problem is that is something goes wrong it crashes windows to a memory dump. It is a good program when it works, but if something goes wrong it is impossible to fix with out a fresh install of windows, and something goes wrong way to often.

I agree. Process Explorer is great.

I don't remember what I use right now. It is ancient and does the job. I might give this a try tonight.

Picture viewer: Picasa
Download: picasa.google.com
Check out irfanview. Picasa is good if you want to use google as your online picture storage.

Notepad: Metapad
Download: liquidninja.com/metapad
I guess I'm one of the ones that don't know this is something I want. I've never looked at notepad and wanted it to do anything but what it does. When I open notepad all I was it for it to be fast and in unformatted text.

MS Paint: Paint.net
Download: www.getpaint.net
irfanview can do a lot of this as well, but it is not nearly as user friendly for it.

Cleaning utility/software uninstaller: CCleaner
Download: www.piriform.com/ccleaner
CCleaner is the best I've found as well.

Widgets: Rainmeter
Download: rainmeter.net
I have never used this, but I don't know how useful I would find it. I pretty much have my computer set up so that I almost never see the desktop. Everything I need is in the taskbar or Chrome.

Sound recorder: Audacity
Download: audacity.sourceforge.net
Agreed. Audacity is universally accepted as the best.

You missed:

7zip
Best zip manager I've found. Much better then the windows built in one, and IMHO faster then winzip or winrar.

Revo Uninstaller
Because windows uninstall dialog is terrible.

No way Google Chrome is better.
- it doesn't handle many tabs well
- it's heavier on the system (RAM)
- its extension ecosystem isn't as diverse (due to Chrome not allowing extension developers to go bonkers, many extensions are basically fancy bookmarks)
- it's not nearly as customizable off the shelf
- it lacks many features that Firefox has, such as "search for text when I start typing", or a search bar (a must have to be able to easily select and drag-and-drop text into a search engine of your choice)
- its sync function isn't safe (there's no client-side encryption)

Granted Firefox is no saint. I absolutely hate the direction it's going now (chromification) and I have auto-update disable (who gives a damn about security) and only update after I tested the new version to see if none of the features I use (like tab groups, for example) haven't been dropped for no reason...

Of course, different people, different needs. What matters is that you're not using Safari or Internet Explorer.

Windows Security Essentials falls into the 'good enough' catagory.
Read this dude: http://www.howtogeek.com/173291/goo...w-recommends-you-use-a-third-party-antivirus/

You might as well be going bareback.

Winamp is dead. Better look for something else. Personally I love my Media Monkey.
Yeah, Winamp has been dead for 10 years now. This latest scare is meaningless. The version I use now is virtually identical to how Winamp was in 2004. I have looked for something else, though. Nothing is as good, in my view.

Besides, Winamp has now been bought by someone who gives a damn, so hopefully in a few months we'll see a new version out.

Ouch... I've been using it for a few years now, I think since 2009 or maybe earlier... Have never had a problem, and the developers are very nice in their support, the one time I needed it.

Check out irfanview. Picasa is good if you want to use google as your online picture storage.
I did. It's too damn ugly. It's more functional for the most part, specially since I don't use Picasa's more advanced features, but the interface is a scare...

I guess I'm one of the ones that don't know this is something I want. I've never looked at notepad and wanted it to do anything but what it does. When I open notepad all I was it for it to be fast and in unformatted text.
So do I, and Metapad does that better. The interface is ugly though...

I have never used this, but I don't know how useful I would find it. I pretty much have my computer set up so that I almost never see the desktop. Everything I need is in the taskbar or Chrome.
It's more about the looks, if I'm honest. Well, it's widgets we're talking about... But I have two screens, and my second screen was off a lot of the time, so now I loaded it with some nice rainmeter skins and now it looks pretty, and allows me to control Winamp and see the time while enjoying the left side of my two-screen wallpapers

7zip
Best zip manager I've found. Much better then the windows built in one, and IMHO faster then winzip or winrar.
I didn't want to go too overboard with my list I use it too, and don't forget this:

http://www.7ztm.de/

Because 7zip is too damn ugly, and since you can make it look better, why not do it?

The pain underlying above sardonicism is justified! Forget FX.....TRY PALE MOON!!!

NO! Winamp was BOUGHT; it is alive and well!!!!! Why do you say it's been dead for 10 years? It was never broke, so, in my experience, never needed fixing.

As for zipping apps.....I now only use Winrar. it covers every base perfectly and immediately. Its Wizard rocks.

-Chrome for me.
-No antivirus. Occasional malwarebytes scans with a different exe name. Been doing this for 4 years, no infection yet.
-Foobar2000 is a great music player alternative. RAM usage is nonexistant when playing music.
-VLC wins for me, by far. MPCHC is too old, and too ugly. Weird that my space bar 'pause' works perfectly.
-Windows 8.1 pretty much got rid of my necessity of teracopy.
-Windows 8.1 has a pretty good task manager from get-go. I used process explorer before, and sometimes I was overwhelmed at the process list/tree.
-Notepad works great for raw text, but I rarely use it.
-CCleaner is indeed a great application.

These are my preferences.

Can you explain this further please ? Are you saying you changed malwarebytes.exe to something else so it would not get disabled by malware ?

.

no its not, and even if the company did go out it would still work, and IMO nothing can touch it for its simplicity and window shade mode. i honestly dont think i will ever stop using it

as for the rest of the list for me

Opera
Avast
no Firewall
PotPlayer - will play anything with less issues IMO vs MPC
standard windows copy is fine for me
Same with task manager/proicess thing - i have no idea why i would want that
similar with auto run (CCCleaner can do startup things)
Picassa/lightroom
Editpad Lite
Photoshop
ccCleaner & Malwarebytes
Windows gadgets are fine for me
also use audacity but only for editing i never record with it

I use both Firefox, and IE. I use Firefox on sites I am not so sure about and IE just about everywhere else.

AVG All anti-virus software suck. I have seen the best rated ones allow computers to get heavily infected.

Winamp for music, VLC for videos with subtitles since WMP doesn't seem to like to disable them. other than a few different DVD/CD burning programs, CUTE FTP and Pain Shop Pro I stick with windows software.

When I'm on Windows, I can't live without notepad++. It is the best lightweight text editor for the platform, hands down. For more involved editing (script programming or stuff without a true IDE), I use SublimeText.
