Kiss my balls. I have worked with many government workers. They all think they're competent. Few of them are.

So I'm lumped in there? I've worked with more than you, and guarantee there's lots that would thrive in private industry too. People's priorities for balancing home and work life are very different, no reason to look down on ALL the government guys. Its just the stupid unions allowing the shit workers to never get fired that ruins it for the rest of us.
I know I work my balls off here and they'd lose their best worker if I ever moved on.

90% of govt employees I have worked with would not cut it in the private sector

90% of the govt employees i work with (about 95% of our business is municipal) came from the private sector.

it really depends on what jobs/ level youre talking about. i work with skilled tradesmen all the time, as well as specialists that know their shit. if they dont, they dont last very long.

Fuck the government, honestly. I'm so sick of these incompetent fucks. Why don't you go stare at another issue for another nine months and see if you can not come to a decision on anything else. How hard is to look at an analysis and see the huge ass safety margin and use your fucking brain, instead of wasting everyone's time about an issue that could cause a few percent divergence, at best.

Fuck the NRC.

Fuck.

No wonder we don't have any fucking jobs.

I've always heard if you get a government job you have a hard time going back to corporate?

Specifically IT.

Anyone ever go gov back to private and have them pass you over because you were once gov?

I was a government employee for almost 10 years and I'm now on the private side with a pretty big player in the IT industry.

I don't think I've been looked over, but it's kind of difficult to tell. I've applied for a few jobs I think I was perfectly qualified for and didn't get a callback, so I suppose it's possible.

Hell, the people doing the hiring can judge you for all sorts of things you'd never know about: being fat, ugly, of X ethnicity, gay, etc, whatever. Proving discrimination IMO would be pretty difficult.

I've worked in both the public and private sectors in IT, and in my experience there's some truth to this statement, but 90% is a little high. I'd say about 50%, and what's interesting is they don't always start that way: the system breeds their attitude and apathy.

Also in IT it's not quite the same, as it's a relatively "new" industry the work force in general seems to be younger.

However....

Also in IT you find representatives of the very worst of government, the guy who has no business being in the position he's in; he's completely inept and would never, ever even be interviewed for a job like he has now on the outside. His job as a mainframe operator went away and they didn't know what to do with him. He's a senior systems administrator who couldn't tell you any more about the TCP/IP stack than I could tell you about how to reattach someone's retina. He's there counting the days until retirement, "working" just hard enough not to get fired.

So yeah, those guys wouldn't make it. Wouldn't hire them to mow my lawn.

I've only done contract work for the city for about a year, everyone seemed alright ... they actually seemed over worked/stressed up the ass for some reason.

One guy was ex NASA, he had some cool stories.

I have to imagine in IT, or any tech position you have to be .. competent, or you wouldn't/shouldn't last.

Shouldn't being the operative word. You'd be surprised at how happily my old manager tolerated some of the dead wood who simply showed up on time and didn't do anything to rock the boat. Evidently sleeping in their cube didn't rock the boat.

....:$....many of them are nice people?

Haha, but I'm sure many if not all were at one point highly trained and qualified and like wheresmybacon said, the apathy just destroys a person after so long.
The levels of beauracracy to get anything done that you know could get done in a couple hours, the fact that everyone in the same wage band is paid equally regardless if you work your balls off or sleep at your desk(the bitch sitting next to me likes to doze), the lack of innovation and forward thinking because the system is just so enormous and bloated and it takes such a long time to implement things across the country(I'm talking federal agencies). Maybe some of the smaller agencies don't see many of these things as much.
And unions. Between apathy and union interference, those are the two things that the public sees and thinks everyone that works here is like that and endorses it. Its not true.

Not all government employees are bad; in fact, the same system that breeds the type of useless old guy sleeping in his cube wouldn't survive if the guy next to him wasn't busting his ass.

The problem is the unions. Their existence enables Mr. Grayballs to sleep in his cube with impunity.

can I opt to not be in the union .

Haha, I've been trying to find a loophole for years!
Apparently, if you don't join due to religious beliefs or something you can "donate" the equivalency of your union dues to your church. But maybe that's just a dumb rumor I've never looked into further.
Could buy a freakin new XBox game every month for the price of dues.

My position pays double in the gov't, so if I got a job there (which doesn't seem likely due to internal promotions only) I wouldn't go back either.

I have a pension, but I want decent pay with a pension, which I don't have right now.
