I use alot of spinners for backups and transporting clients data, etc. I would like to go ALL SSD this year if I make the money! USB 3.0 external by OZC looks good. Then I could dump my black completely or use it purely for archival purposes.

Still too expensive for me. I'd rather spend another $200 on a higher end GPU or just more RAM.

Having the pagefile, windows install dir/programs, and games all on separate disks really helps speed things up. I'm surprised this isn't suggested as an alternative. It gives you waaayyyy more space too.

I still am the first to load on map changes in TF2. . . I probably couldn't compete against RAID 0 G2's, but I also didn't spend a crap ton of money.

When SSD's drop to < 50c per GB, I'll byte.

You will be waiting a while then...

SSD is the goodest! As a ex raptor user, I can say that even my lowly OCZ Agility 60Gb humiliates raptor performance.

As sticker that came with my 60gb OCZ Vertex (thats stuck under the Dell logo on my Vostro 1700) says, and is in my sig as well, "My SSD is faster than your HDD".

Frack, a netbook with an ssd is faster than your desktop with a quad core.
At least on every day tasks like surfing, word processing, booting up.

To all SSD owners who raves about its speed. Well SSD is memory so it better be like 100x or even 1000x (ns vs ms access) faster than a mechanical drive, no surprise there. I think comparing SSD to machanical drive is kind of wrong to begin with. They are two different tech entirely, just used for similar purpose here.

Same here. Loud LOUD LOUD and slower than an F3.

So true.

That's ridiculous to say you can't compare them. Of course you can, the technology of the mass storage medium is changing from spinning platters to solid state drives. You always compare old technologies to new and weight the pros and cons.

You can't just stick your fingers in your ears and discount the benefits of the new technology. It's all very basic now and comes down to size vs. speed for the price. It's up to each person to determine whether the benefits and costs are worth it.

Make no mistake, one day in the not too distant future spinning platter drives will be gone like the floppy.

I just wish the ssd drives would be a little cheaper then they are now, for someone like me the only thing keeping me back is price. The size makes no difference to me as I have never even filled a 160gb hard drive LOL 80gb ssd would be more then enough for me

I am curious, has anyone tried using the old ghost program (before it became part of norton) yet ?

Just wondering if there would be any issues with it making a clone or doing a clone onto your SSD ?

does anyone know where i can get a 52x floppy drive? usb 3.0 would be cool.

acronis works great (free trial) for just cloning - (not true image the drive clone util).

I need the prices to be about half what they are now. Trouble is I always run 2 partitions, 1 for movies/music/games/internet pr0n(don't judge!) and 2nd for my work and study where everything is lean and clean.. I find 60Gb/partition works best for me so if the 120GB drives come down to around $100ish I'm in, untill then caveman drives

I can't wait to get one. I'm hoping for a next-gen 240gb drive in my new build next year. Put Windows 7 and a few choice games/programs on that drive, add in Sandybridge and 8 gigs of DDR3 and it should be a beast.

Umn, so you're saying we shouldn't compare things based on their semantics, but on what they're made of?

I don't think you really thought that completely through, the consequences would be problematic to say the least.

well I think people are saying how amazing SSDs are based on the fact that they are much faster the machanical HDs. I mean they are memory based, they should be comparing to memories and this is just the speed they should be at. If I can afford to buy a super computers I'd compare it to other super computers not my home pc.

So we also shouldn't compare plasma monitors to lcds or oleds because they're all using different techniques to do (more or less) the same?

HDDs and SSDs are both used to store non-volatile data, DRAM isn't. You can replace a HDD with a SSD and vice versa, better not try that with DRAM..

I agree with the other posters. I put a 128gb Samsung SSD in an Intel C2D T7500 laptop, and its been a dream. Basically its taken a laptop that may very well have been on its last legs, and given me probably another 2+ years of use out of it, before I buy a replacement.

That's like saying you cant compare hybrid cars to standard models...

The underlying technology may be different, but the end use is the same.

The lack of space definitely became an issue even on the boot/application drive but after digging around I realized a lot of this had to do with dumbass programs saving humongous backups *cough*iTunes backing up your entire iPod/iPhone*cough*
A few symlinks here and a few symlinks there and BAM, you just freed up a ton of space. Windows also saves those drive restore points so if you keep an eye on all the apps that are trying to keep huge backups on the main drive you can probably fit most of things you need without issue.
Nonetheless since I got ahold of a whole bunch of Sandforce SSDs on the cheap I'm gonna solve my problem with the "total and utter overkill" solution of dumping a whole bunch of them in Raid 0.

Definitely recommend getting one as a boot drive though-they're not even that expensive anymore and if you get lucky and get in on a good sale they're crazy cheap. I'm up to 7 SSDs now and I paid around ~500 bucks total. I did get insanely lucky on my last purchase but nonetheless there's no reason to wait-it's absolutely worth getting a 60GB boot drive. There's a bunch available under $100 so it's not like you have to sacrifice the rest of the system and I'd take the SSD over crazy expensive overclocker RAM or whatever.

And I don't care how much RAM you have, there's just an awesome feeling of seeing that you need to reboot to apply a patch/driver/windows update/whatever and no minding because there's no dreadful downtime. Instead of constantly hitting that postpone reboot button you just reboot in the blink of an eye-and Windows system patches apply blazingly fast so even if there's some massive update you're not stuck sitting around waiting for your computer to update. That always drove me crazy, especially with the large patches.

I love my SSDs.

I definitely could not tolerate going back to traditional mechanical sloths after using SSDs in my main system for so long now.
