I never used raid arrays, velociraptors, etc, so maybe I lack the experience.
However, once you use an SSD drive you will never go back.

Just sayin'

I had my eyes on those WD raptors ever since I built my old Athlon XP computer. I couldn't afford it back then, but now that I can, I just went straight for the SSD instead.

I went back too... on my laptop. Once 160gb SSDs (Intel) drop to $100, then I will go back to SSDs.

Actually, no big deal since my Laptop is pretty slow anyway (M11x) the SSD wouldn't help that much.

SSD is the goodest! As a ex raptor user, I can say that even my lowly OCZ Agility 60Gb humiliates raptor performance.

SSD boot drive. I'm careful to put all data and downloads on a rotating drive. Very pleased. Now using Win 7. Began with SSD when I had XP on this computer. Western Digital's initial SSD (64GB) claimed to uniquely be compatible with XP without using TRIM and without utilities to fiddle the partition alignment. Just worked. Now I'm with Win 7.

Sure like SSD as boot drive. Now have another SSD in my laptop. Used Acronis to do backup and restore of partition and MBR, no problems

For some crazy reason I tried my WD Black 1TB spinner for a part of the evening. WTF was I thinking! I could not get back fast enough to my Corsair NOVA. SHeesh! LOUD, slow like hell to boot, seeking all over the freaking place. SSD's rule and anyone who does not think so has not tried a good one.

And I really liked the WD before I tried a SSD!

I'll definitely get an SSD when their prices drop to more reasonable levels. ATM, I still cannot justify the price:capacity ratio to myself. Besides, I got a 3 y old CPU+mobo and a 2 y old GPU that need to be upgraded first, and I also have my eyes on a Pentax K-5. These rank higher on the 'want' list

My bank account whimpers in fear....

I popped an Intel X25-M into my 3 year old cpu-mobo and no upgrade of those components could match the performance increase I got from the SSD.
I have yet to see any Win7 machine come into my computer repair shop that can match my Intel Core Duo @2.66 with SSD. I don't do gaming, however, so I can't speak to the graphics processor.

There is no 180 dollar upgrade that can touch a SSD.

I am running a old dell E520/530 with a pent D 3.ghz cpu and 2 gb ram. I am really thinking of buying a case, cheap S775 mobo and E7500 cpu and slapping a ssd in here

You would be surprised. I put a OCZ Vertex 2 40gb in my Atom N270 powered netbook and the difference is like night and day.

I am considering doing this in the future, prices are still of concern so I have held off up to this point. My computer is on 24/7 anyway so shutdown/startup is not a concern however gaming is and the ability to load those games quickly so a higher capacity SSD would be favorable as I typically have several games loaded and it is not uncommon these days for single games to chew up 10-15GB of disk space a piece.

Hell I bet I could probably just throw a ssd in my pc I have now and it would make a huge difference, probably enough that I wouldn't even want to buy a newer cpu. I still need to get win 7.

How big of a SSD do you guys think I would need? I don't game at all, mainly web surf on the forums, facebook, email and some netflix here and there. I easily have under 5gb of music also. I was thinking a 64gb SSD would be enough, whatcha think

Personally, I wouldn't consider anything less than 60GB (especially for a laptop). I also don't like how many 30GB SSDs are a bit pricey in terms of cost per GB compared to many 60GB SSDs.

I'd leave the 5GB of music in a HDD.

slap the ssd on what you have and you will be happy - money saved.

no joke. anything with SATA will spring back to life. the slowest system i have is a p4-2.8 (NO HT) with sata - for business use (10-20 browser tabs, flash, java, etc), IM, Outlook, excel, etc - works great.

Brand new 3.0ghz i3 based machine with 7200 rpm drive - unbearable doing the same tasks.

that is a fact

I know I won't go back. But it's going to be a damn while before I can afford another one.

I did this with my aging Q6600 rig, went from XP pro to Win 7 + 160GB G2 and it was like I had quadrupled my processor performance for the night and day difference.
