One can't see the other and vice-versa

I have 2 comps networked together (A. uses XP B. Uses 98) through a Linksys BEFSR41 router. Both connect on the internet fine, and both up until today saw each other. I decided to format my harddisk on computer A (winxp). After I did that, I went into my network places and clicked on "Set up a home office or network". I ran that and I then ran it on my comp B (win98) because it told me to. After that the two still wouldn't see each other but could use the internet. Both have their C: set to share, but i'm pretty sure if they can't see each other in the first place it doesn't really matter if they're set to share or not. I have tried resetting the router, no go. I ran ipconfig on both comps. Here are the results:

Computer A (winxp):

Connection-specific DNS Suffix...:attbi.com
IP Address...:192.168.1.100
subnet mask...:255.255.255.0
default gateway...:192.168.1.1

Computer B (win 98)

0 ethernet adapter
IP address...:0.0.0.0
subnet mask...:0.0.0.0
default gateway...:blank

1 ethernet adapter
IP address...:192.168.1.101
subnet mask...:255.255.255.0
defualt gateway...:192.168.1.1

I dont have the slightest clue as to what's going on. I can't understand why computer B is giving me info for Ethernet 0. Also, why is there no Connection Specific DNS Suffix for comp B (win 98). From comp A I can ping comp B, but I can't ping comp A from comp B. As well, I cannot ping a normal site from either (let's say www.yahoo.com), however my internet is up. Perhaps it's cause my cable modem? Since yesterday the thing has been flimsy (comcast). It had periods where it wouldn't work, and then suddenly it would go pretty fast for a few minutes (1 or 2) and then just go back to not loading or loading extremely slow. Today the internet itself is working fast, but when downloading something over time from a good server I have extremely low download rates. Would appreciate any more info anyone can offer. If you need more information about the computers, please let me know

Just called Comcast. Said that w/ the virus and regular outages, the entire state of texas (I live in dallas) was pretty much out. I still don't understand how that would affect me so much though. I can surf just fine, I just can't ping and download really well. How could I load web-pages and not be able to ping a server?

All I know is that networking a Win9x and a WinXP computer together is extremely difficult since the interfaces are so different. If you Google, I'm sure you could find some useful information.

Where this comes from?

The MS "Tricks" (i.e. wizards, XP on w98 disks etc.)Concerning Network configuration are very "Quirky" they are constant source of trouble.

It takes few minutes to configure Win98 Manually and WinXP Manually and usually it works.

Some time after people already used the "Tricky Wizards" even manful configuration would not yield sharing. In such a situation spend few minutes more to install NetBEUI on both computers. Use NetBEUI as the default sharing and have a good life.

Log to the following page.

Scroll down, in the middle (yellow hi-lited) you will find info, and links to solve sharing problems.

I figured out what it was. Apparently when I set up my network, I had to select an option which automatically enabled The windows based firewall. After that link you posted, I read that it prevents sharing w/in a network. Turned it off, and all was good. Thanks for the link.
