One Computer, 2 NICs, is it possible to request 2 different IPs from a DHCP server?

If I have one computer w/ two nics, plugged into my univeristy ethernet... can or will my computer request different IPs from the DHCP server?

The reason I am asking is because I wanted to run a FTP server, as well as a game server/stats page/forums page on separate IPs.

Could this be done? or is it not possible?

thanks

Should work fine. My university doesn't care. The trick is that the DHCP server doesn't even know that both NICs are in the same machine. As long as you can have two computers hooked up, it will work fine.

Hmm.. great...

next questiron is... Can I have one IP routed to my FTP server, and one IP routed to the game server?

and if that is possible, how would I desginate that IPs... would this cause any sort of lag or slowdown in transfer? i.e.. if someone were d/ling off my ftp, would it cause for the game server to lag? since its not using the same bandwidth, it wouldn't right?

thanks!

It shouldnt if there is enough bandwidth on the backbone. But (and I dont know how game servers work so this may be a non-issue) if the HDD's are slow you could have problems due to that bottle neck.

Having 2 IP addresses does not magically double your bandwidth or halve your latency (unless you have >100Mbps pipes to the 'net, in which case I'm transferring to LA ). Most likely you won't even saturate a 10Mbps NIC on a university network.

And I don't even think it's possible to have 2 NICs on the same segment in a network environment like schools.

Edit: Replaced "subnet" with "segment"
