Thanks!!!! My "courtesy buyback" vehicle was auctioned as a "fleet vehicle", so "passing" their Lemon Check is pretty well worthless.... Nice to see where the car went, though!

Heh, the dealer I bought my used car from gave me a carfax that showed a clean history....ran the VIN tonight and it shows a odometer rollback......

1/24/97 35,208
1/10/00 34,543

Their $5000 guarantee will do jack, because the DMV still shows it as a clean title. I will however go bitch at the dealer and make up some wild threats

Depending on how many digits your odometer has got, I suppose it's also possible that in 3 years the car had 99,335 miles put on it....

I had to disable my firewall (Norton Internet Security) to get the link to work. It always a good idea to try disabling your firewall if you get weird errors like that.

Good deal for the free carfax report, BUT

I don't think car fax is worth much.

In 1998, I had a severe crash with my car. Over 10 gran in damages. 1998!!!

The car fax report shows my car as being in excellent shape with no major damage.

Surely the insurance co has reported the payout to whomever such things get reported [by now].

I have a similar experience.

In 1998, my 1995 Cirrus was rear ended with over $9,000 in damage (why they did not total it, I have no idea). The damage was paid by insurance and the work was done AT THE DEALERSHIP.

I pulled a Carfax on it last year before trading it in, and lo and behold, there was not a thing on it.

I would be very wary of using these to determine if a car you are looking at has had major damage. It might detect a salvage title or odometer fraud, but I would not bet on it...

My best advice is to get someone in the body repair industry to go with you to look at a car or pay for an independent inspection... stuff that the untrained eye would never notice are red flags to these guys. I learned a few "tricks of the trade" a while back that have helped me avoid these cars- a quick search turned up a good guide here.

Sure, CarFax reports are not the "end all, be all" of reports. Properly checking out a vehicle - which includes a mechanical inspection by a certified mechanic and an inspection of the body by a body shop to determine any major body repairs should be in order. However, CarFax will tell you immediately if the car you are looking at has ever been a rental car - which, for me, is information that I want to know quickly so I can move onto the next vehicle. CarFax saved me a lot of time. I was able to run the known VIN numbers and get a report. I then was able to quickly eliminate about 80% of the potential vehicles that I was interested in. From there, I could put all of my focus on the remaining 20%.
