dumb.

If he was atheist he should revel in the fact that he has the chance to debate in an open forum and in essay form his viewpoints with educated peers and teacher.

Quit whining you idiot. People who bitch about this stupid stuff should just be denied a degree.

Hmm, I kind of like this idea.

So why did you go to college?

I think a better question, is why does the bible a book responsible for most of Westerns History of the last 2000 years offend you?

If you are deeply offended just take the opposite stance. My professors wanted a history paper outlining the plight of the Palestinian people, I wrote a paper putting the blame on them. I still got a A on it, just do a good job.

Even still, you should not object this strongly on ethical grounds about a book.

So you should drop a class whenever your professor is a liberal whack job also? Liberalism is also for the stupid.

Suck it up bitch, the research isn't going to hurt you. If I had dropped every class that was taught by some kind of a whack job with weird beliefs and habits I would still be in college 20 years later. Most professors are weird, that is why they hide in academia instead of toughing it out in the real world. Piss him off....become successful.

Doesn't seem like it is. You said the books have heavy religious overtones, that describes half the great literature that has been created in the last 300 years. Hell, Camus had extensive religious tones.

And if you really disagree with the bible, wouldnt the best way to come up with arguments against it be to study it?

I'm still waiting for more info. Surely you could tell us the two stories so far that have been assigned.

I really don't think this is that big a deal. Part of the experience is broadening your horizons, you shouldn't be so closed minded. Reading a book about religion doesn't negatively affect you in any way, you're still free to believe whatever you want.

Its not religious unless you make it out to be. As posted above, its the most influential text in Western Civilization. It has great historic, cultural, and literary value. Its no different from ready the Odyssey, the Epic of Gilgamesh, Paradise Lost, etc. So what if some people find it religious? Get over it.

Yes. Lord knows that when you take a class you shouldn't expect to have to do any research or, *gasp* learn.

What? The most widely published book in history that has shaped the path of the world for almost 2000 years and is a reoccuring theme throughout Western civilization and literature. That should not be allowed to exist outside of a theological discussion? Jesus Christ, what happens when you have to do a report on Greek mythology? Do you refuse because you do not believe in the overtones of polytheistic religion that thrusts itself into every story?

Get over yourself, it's a BOOK. This is no different than if you had to read up on ancient Grecian religions so you could understand the role, importance, and references in any Greek mythological story. He isn't asking you to BECOME a Christian, it seems he is asking you to become familiar with the works that have become one of the most significant influences in human history.

Normally, I wouldn't care - however, the most recent assignment seems to require a knowledge of Christianity/the Bible in order to complete it. I thought that seemed a bit ridiculous and emailed the professor - basically asking how anyone who's not religious can be expected to complete the assignment. The response I got was lackluster and about what I expected - go research it. So... I guess my options are go read the bible or get lost.....

I'd be willing to suck it up and just do the damn thing, and get a probably shitty grade - but I'm a bit worried about the rest of the semester. I've also spoken to others who have taken this professors classes, and they've also mentioned the religious stuff, great....

What now? Ride it out? Take it to a department chair? Dean?

This should be fun either way.....

See what the pre-requisits are and if none of the pre-requisits involve the Bible, point this out to him. If he doesn't care, go over his head and go all teh way up to the Dean if you need to.

So is Mein Kampf.

The thing is, this is college. Classes have pre-requisits. One should not be forced to read Mein Kompf, The Satanic Bible or any other material that could be deemed objectionable unless it is a pre-requisite to the course.

It's funny, I gave two blatantly obvious examples of things that people would object to. I'm sure that's not good enough for the God fearing people here. There are enough people that are not Christians or worship Jesus in the US to equate the Bible, Mein Kompf, The Satanic Bible as equivilent in terms of education.

Ignore most of what everyone is saying in here - you're paying for this, not the other way around. Talk to the dept. chair, unless you go to a Catholic school..like I do *sigh*.

I had to take a class on religion. Being agnostic, that's no fun, especially when I thought I was taking a history of Christianity course when it turned out to more be like "How to be a good Christian 101."

you're teacher is a retard. if you can't drop the class i'd use the opportunity to throw in lots of other ridiculous, made up stuff too for your own amusement. if you have to site stuff from the bible you might as well also reference episodes of scooby-doo, old comics, and characters from movies side by side the religious stuff.

I love the people bitching that unless the content of the course is specific to your every pre-determined belief it is useless and a waste of money

Yes a society who is grown up on CNN and never has any ideas challenged is exactly what we want
