One TB Seagate SATA Drive Problems (Can Both Be Bad)?

I am currently running a SageTV PC with an ECS KT600a motherboard with 512 MB Ram, an Antec 380 watt power supply and one Sony CD/DVD drive.

I have two SATA hard drives that have been running in this system for SageTV purposes. One is a 200 GB Maxtor and the other a 250 GB WD.

I recently purchased a Seagate One TB drive from Frys B&M.

I replaced the second 250 GB with this new Seagate drive and noticed that upon bootup my PC got past the standard post screen, but stalled on the SATA drives found indication. It displayed some message (in poor English) "the bios seems bad, hardware not recognized", and froze at that point.

If I removed the SATA cable from the Seagate drive, the PC booted normally. I then tried the following steps:

Put the Seagate in as the only primary drive (removed all old drives) with same problem as above.

Swapped out the SATA cable on the Seagate drive with same result.

Tried another power supply connection with same result.

Tried taking out the speed jumper (150 to 300 gig/sec selection) with same results.

I then decided that I got a bad drive and returned it to Frys for another one. After installing this new one (again replacing the second original drive with this) I got the same result. What is interesting is this time I just placed the drive down on the desk on top of the protective static packaging and "tapped" the drive and noticed it made a slight 'clunk'. I then rebooted and the darn thing was recognized and booted into windows!

I then did a full format and checked the properties of the drive. I'm using Windows XP Pro with all the necessary updates.

I then rebooted a couple of times and all was well.

Then while the system was powered down, I put the drive into the Antec Sonata case, rebooted, and had the same error as before.

I then removed the drive, and placed it on the desk as before and could get it to recognize after tapping it. Funny thing is once it was recognized I could reboot all day long and all was fine. As soon as I moved it I had the same error as before.

What is going on here? Could I have purchased TWO bad hard drives from Frys? I did note that one was made in China and the other in Thailand.

I did read THIS thread, but it doesn't have the same problem I'm experiencing.

I'm just not sure what to do next. I was thinking maybe the power supply was marginal, but I was running two hard drives in this system with no problems before.

Is anyone else having bad experiences with these new Seagate 1 TB drives?

The only other thing I might try is to put this drive in another PC, but currently they are running IDE drives (hassle, taking those drives out, putting this one in, wash, rinse, repeat... Just wanted to see if I was doing something obviously wrong with experts here!

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Well, just in case some other poor soul tries to get a Seagate 1TB drive going with this ECS KT600-A motherboard, here is a reply from ECS technical support when asked this question:

This motherboard will not support any HDD above 200-300GB. There are hardware specifically chipset limitations.

I thought this was a weird response as SATA was not supposed to have these limitations. Speed maybe (depending on age/type of mobo) but not size.
