Weapons of Arse Consumption
If Americans continue to get fatter at current rates, by 2020 about one in five health-care dollars spent on people aged 50 to 69 could be due to obesity -- 50 percent more than now, the Rand Corporation study found.

In 2000, 14 percent of money spent on health care for U.S. men aged 50 to 69 went to obesity-related complications including diabetes and heart disease. In 2020, that could rise to 21 percent, the researchers said.

maybe if personal responsibility came back in style people would say to themselves "gee I eat to much, maybe I should eat less and get some excercise..."

If they had to pay a higher premium for their health insurance, they'd have some incentive to lose weight. As it is, most people's insurance is purchased by their employer, so they couldn't care less.

And give tax incentives to organic growers. Let Whole Foods become the next walmart (or let wal-mart become like whole foods).

okay, then make it 100%. When a can of Soda costs like 2.00, people might hesitate to drink six or seven a day.

Invent nanobots that eat fat, or use drugs to block the storage of fat.

it is funny watching people thinking the government should do something because of the lack of discipline and responsibility on the part of some.

actually it is not funny, but sad.

"...shows tobacco use was still the leading cause of death in 2000, killing 435,000 people, or 18.1 percent of everyone who died."

wow, 1 in 5 deaths can be prevented, relatively easily. but then again conquering the stupidity of fellow humans is an impossible task.

i wonder where old age ranks

avg american consumes 3000 Cal/day

FDA recommends 2000 Cal/day. some say they just arbitrarily picked this because its a nice round number but actually its based on how much a pregnant nursing mother should consume to support herself and a baby.

the actual healthy amount between 1500-1800Cal/day

so, are you eating like a pregnant nursing mother?

I weighed 315 last October. I'm now down to 234, but I have 39 more to go. Its been the hardest thing I've ever done, but after losing the first 40, I couldn't stop. Now I am definately noticing a difference in endurance, not to mention the fact that I have way more girl problems, which is a good thing I guess. It should be a war against obesity. Its just like consuming anything else, you do what is easy. But you have to learn to say no at some point.

Have income tax, property tax and sales tax be proportional to body weight. No it doesn't make much sense, but it does make cents.

Why don't we tax the obese heavily on fast food, and give them tax breaks on healthier choices? Imagine a Big-Mac costing 7.00 dollars for a four hundred pound man!! I guess skinny people would be black market selling fast food in a day though.

Guess who picks up the bill for the health complications? Yup, the government (ie, all of us). So why shouldn't the government try to do something about it?

because self disicpline and responsibility cannot be legislated, you may be comfortable with a government so intrusive as to place dietary restrictions on you, but i would not.

in what ways exactly does the government foot the bill for all the obese people? we do not have socialized medicine. (thank God!)
