That depends on your carrier, but it is a good point. Plus some people don't want to hassle with a phone that cannot be sold in the US, especially now that the OnePlus invite system is dismantled.

My comment was more along the lines of: "Two years ago OnePlus led the pack for phone value, while today someone else leads that pack." I am sure for someone the OnePlus Three is still a good fit for them, even if they don't provide the absolute best value in the market.

To be honest, my wife and I both still use our OPOs and we are both quite interested in the OP3. We'll be waiting a few weeks to see how things shake out with updates and such. I can tell you this, the memory management issue is a non-issue for us. Neither of us tries to keep a bunch of apps in memory and neither of us is afraid of 3rd party ROMs. She's on Sultanxda still and I was also until Saturday when I went to official COS software to see how that side of things was going.

OPO were almost first with a high-end phone at a mid-range price, so they had a good head start. But they've lost their lead due to things like the Cyanogen partnership fiasco, the long wait for Android updates, the OP2 throttling/scaling and screen issues etc.

The OP3 looks like a return to competition though there are clearly still issues. It's not the first phone which aggressively kills apps though. Android battery life and memory management are a total mess. Still it's weird that my OPO with 3GB of RAM multitasks better than a brand new, 6GB phone.

For what it's worth about the memory management issues. You can allow more background apps to stay in memory by changing a value in the build.prop file. Root is required for this, but it's a piece of cake to do on the OP3. There is an all-in-one toolkit already.

After root, you just need to modify the ro.sys.fw.bg_app_limit from 20 to a bigger number. The bigger the number, the more apps are allowed to stay in the background. This could have negative impact on the battery life, but it'll enhance multitasking greatly.

After this modification, the oneplus 3 was able beat the S7E by a very slim margin. Without the modification, the OP3 lost by more than 30 seconds.

Anyway, I am ~2.5 weeks into my OP3 experience (coming from a OP1) and I am very happy so far. Everything is faster and smoother, plus the screen looks far more vibrant. Camera is much better too.

My complaints are minor and maybe they apply to the OP2 as well(?):

1. the back of the phone is way too freaking slick; it always wants to fall out of my hand and pocket which drives me nuts. Really missing the old backing.
2. Moving the headphone jack to the bottom of the phone is so freaking annoying. It feels completely wrong and since I have headphones plugged in about 95% of the time, it just gets in the way when trying to charge, etc. Really hate that choice.
3. Switching the back button and the menu/running apps button. I'll get used to it, but it's just weird and I keep pressing the wrong button.

Anyway, so far so good.

I am listening to podcasts or music and have a pedometer running all day, plus I browse instagram and these forums frequently, plus some texting, etc.; my battery is typically around 20% by the end of the day.

It takes me just under an hour to go from 0% to 100% using the dash charge.

Quickcharge would be slow. You have to use the 1+ proprietary dash charge.

Yeah, but how slow? As long as it's not 1A I'm game. 5V/2A would be acceptable (for overnight charging. Also, too bad there's no Qi). Do you think that's achievable?

Are you kidding? The Oneplus One (OPO) received 3 OTAs over the last 2 months or so. It's running the latest Marshmallow. And this is COS, the official OS of the OPO. OOS for OPO is dated I'll grant that.

And this doesn't even begin to address the aggressively active ROM community especially over at XDA. I can't believe the legs my 2+ year old OPO has, I love it.

OxygenOS is NOT the default OS of the OPO. It was created for the OP2 and then became the default OS for OPX and OP3. But COS was and still is the default OS for the OPO and it is getting updated and is feature complete.

my last phone, once I set it up with a custom rom in the first 2 days, I haven't updated or touched for it's entire useful life before replacement.

updates are 100% overrated in the face of 300-400$ in savings.

and there is nothing wrong with 3rd party custom roms on xda, in fact I prefer it.

My needs are limited: I want a functioning Android phone that I can hope to keep for 18-24 months (more is a bonus, less is a drain on my wallet). I use the phone for GPS, banking and emails but no games (well, 'Chess', but that's hardly worth mentioning). Even the camera on it is a Hail Mary for when I don't have my DSLR handy (which is not often).

So looking at all that, I may not miss frequent updates much, and while rooting it is tempting academically, I've not even considered it yet, just sayin...

In other words, I'm a vanilla user, so if it's good enough when newly purchased, and stays the same into the next year, it serves my purpose.

OPX is dead in the water and the OP forums are inundated with angst. But the OPO, OP2, and OP3 all are getting updates. OPO and OP3 most. Being that their first device, the oldest in their fleet, is still getting updates is an endorsement of their commitment to their products. I'm not sure how you can spin that into a negative?

Also echoing this request. I was going to get a used S7 Edge after the Note 7 announcement was somewhat disappointing (Note 7 has same specs as S7 Edge basically).

Then I realized the OP3 has same Snapdragon 820 CPU and even more RAM at 6GB yet costs only $399...

I would imagine the camera is way better on the S7 Edge as compared to OP3 though.
