It looks like these speakers are from the Onkyo LSV-900 home theater system. I'm going to try and find reviews of the speakers included in that package.

Edit: here is the one customer review. Interesting, he got them off Ebay
Onkyo D-30PC5
Thank heavens Vanns.com offered this product via EBAY. The price through Onkyo USA for these same speakers is $200.00 and not the $299 shown. However, since I paid only $86.00, I got a bargain! The speakers deliver excellent sound quality. When teamed with the Onkyo Sub-woofer(purchased through Onkyo remanufactured for $100) my systems sound as good as one of my friends who spent hundreds more. Don't be fooled by the smaller size because these speakers deliver a very large clean crisp sound. I do recommend a sub-woofer with .

How do you think these speakers would work with a receiver that puts out 75Watts/Channel @ 5 Channels and 120 Watts/Channel @ 2 channels? Will my receiver blow these little guys? Is there any way to prevent this and still use them with my receiver? They look like a pretty sweet deal...

Onkyo stuff was pretty boss back in the day... I remember they made some CD players and receivers that were built like tanks.

I know exactly what you're saying, and I agree.

Amen to that I had one that was at least 15 years old, survived a house fire before I sold it to a pawn shop for $10. Probably still working today.

Damnit! Damnit! Damnit! Why do I do this to myself? Guy at work told me to checkout Hifi.com before ordering Onkyos. Found a set of Cambridge Soundworks New Ensemble III Home Theater for $212.49 down from $499. Plus there is a 20% off coupon that makes it a deal to jump on So that brings the price down to $170.

So now what do I do

Well, one thing you realize about setting a HT is that you can always go higher and higher. I bought the Onkyo's for my bedroom. For $100, I think it will serve me just fine. I wouldn't skimp if it is for your main HT setup. Just set a limit and do a lot of reading over at places like audioreview.com. I'm sure you know all of that, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

Also, it looks like Hifi.com sells on ebay as well. Might want to check there to see if they offer them for cheaper. Some places actually do that....

Badluck--you're right--a bargain on something you don't want or need is no bargain. I originally looked at the Onkyos for a home theater in my basement. They will work just fine for that. Besides my wife reminded me that I have an old set of Cambridge speakers (from when I was in grad school many, many years ago) still in storage.

The Onkyos are on the way and the Jayhawks are on the road to the final four.

Jhawk, I sent you a PM regarding a post you made a few months back. It was for a subwoofer at Sears. Now that I'm getting this Onkyo setup, I need a cheap (decent) subwoofer. Nothing that will rock my apartment, just something that will get me by. Any idea if that subwoofer is still available over at Sears?? I don't even know the model #??

if you talk to any experienced speaker person, be it car or home audio, they will tell you that there is hardly any risk of blowing out a speaker with too many watts. it is too hard. you have to remember, if a receiver is saying it puts out 75 watts a channel, this is probably peak, even if it is continuous it still won't put that out all the time (i won't get into that). during normal playing, even at the loudest possible volume, the amp/receiver is not putting out 75 continuous, but only peaking at that much, if at all. ups and downs.

so it is very very hard to blow a speaker because your amp is powerful. this is a misconception, and the truth is actually the opposite. it is very easy to blow your speakers because the amp is not powerful enough, and you try to drive your speakers too hard. this results in "clipping" and probably is the cause of 99% of all speakers being blown.

ever look at a car amp and notice the little gain screw? most people think it is a volume knob or something. what you are supposed to do is set the knob on your Deck to the point where you want it to be the loudes (around 3/4 is good) then turn up the gain, with an oscilloscope hooked up until the signal (sin wave or cosin i forget) starts to clip, then turn it down just a bit. this ensures your amp and speakers never clip, and you will never blow them.

oh yeah, about these speakers, these are very decent, especially for $100 (i bought one for my GF's little bro). if you guys want to step up just a bit though, in the future, look into "Paradigm Atom" speakers. these are probably the best bang for the buck out there. not cheap as these Onkyo's, but you get big sound from cheap speakers. can't order online but should be a dealer nearby. google paradigm atoms and check out the reviews (make sure to add the word speakers) they are around $189 a pair.

Onkyo rocks! They used to only make high end equipment, but now they're trickling the products down to consumer level prices. I have a receiver from them, and it's absolutely awesome. I'd be interested to hear what their speakers sound like.

Cambridge home theater speakers are fantastic. I have the Ensemble IV's paired with my Onkyo receiver. You made a great choice, so don't sweat it.
