When did Onkyo started to make DVD players? Maybe it's made by Cyberhome. Now, the decison gets tougher.

I was wondering the same thing.

One of the guys over at DVDTalk was pretty sure that Onks were re-badged Toshibas.

May be worth the time to compare the face of this unit with the Toshiba PScans......

The Onkyo website states that this player is a 27MHz player ... now thats is *NOT* a progressive scan player ... since for progressive it needs to be 54MHz or higher.

Anyone care to confirm this ?

RE:"can someone explain progressive scan to an ignirant guy like me"

Sure. Has to refreshing of lines.

Basically, if you have an HDTV get a progressive scan. If you don't it's optional, depending on whether you are getting an HDTV.

To take it one step further, isn't it something like:

a regular DVD player takes turns refreshing just the odd or even lines on successive passes, but a PS refreshes both odd and even lines on every pass.....?

I think Onkyo dvd players are made by Panasonic.

I'm looking at the Panasonic DVD-RV32K instead since it (supposedly) supports multisession and VBR

Great choice in my opinion. I have this one and believe it is the best bang for the buck, very high quality, and has tons of features. You can find them some places for $99. By the way, unless you have a HDTV don't bother with the progressive scan players as you will see no difference with a regular TV.

onkyo has the 4th best rated dvd players on the market for high-end home theater in consumer reports 2002 guide, beaten only by pioneer, panasonic and denon if i remember correctly (I have the DV-SP500, its VERY good.)

I donno about the 300's firmware, but the DV-SP500 is not firmware upgradable so far...I can't find a bios for it, and I can't get any codes from other onkyo players to work correctly on it (one pulls up the bios screen but you can't edit the hex's, its just a view mode.)

I'd avoid it if your ganna use other-than-region1-discs.

The quality, however, is NOTICABLE compared to my friends Apex AD-800, Apex's TOP OF THE LINE Progressive Scan player. If my player using svideo is noticably better at decoding mpeg2 (less artifacts; clearer explosions and anything with brightness or redness, and much deeper blacks) looks better than his using svideo on a simular tv (both panasonics with the same generation tube), I'd bet any onkyo is better than an Apex OR ghettohome player.

Not only will u not see a differece, but it flat out wont work in progressive mode.
It isn't a bad idea to buy this tho so if and when u do upgrade to an HDTV, you dont have to shell out for a progressive player, just make sure when u hook this up to an interlaced (non hdtv) tv, that u set it to interlaced mode and not PS.
