OK........just picked up an Onkyo TX-SR600 at Circuit City for $299.99 + 6% sales tax in my area for total of $317 and change.

The lowest I've located online is from BestPriceAudioVideo.com at $419 shipped.

This price is found in their Holiday 2002 advert magazine that's out right now. On page 19, lower left corner, is a description for an Onkyo TXSR600 receiver and references picture "B" for price which lists at $299.99. Picture "C", interestingly enough, has a price listed in it for $499.99 and the description referenced to it is for an Onkyo TX-SR500.

Obviously they got the prices and letters mixed up. The list for the SR600 is $499 and the SR500 is on sale in the store for $284....we saw that tonight as we were trying to purchase this one.

The sales girl looks at the ad, says she's got to get a manager to override the price and she'll be right back to ring it up. Right, I figure. They'll see it's obviously a mistake and not honor it.......maybe try to give a slight discount or something, but not sell a $500 receiver for $300.

Well, I was wrong. She was gone a bit longer than I expected, but it rang up at $299.99 and out I walked ..... quickly.

You may get them to honor it, too. Decent AV receiver, especially for the price.

Good luck!!!

$299 isn't such a bad price. However, if you're looking for power, then the Onkyo 600 may not cut it. On independent tests that were paid for by a user (NormanL) over at the Home Theater Forum, the Onkyo 600 only put out 34 watts per channel when all channels were driven.

As you probably know, this was posted at Phatwaallet 3-4 days ago and most people are reporting that the error has been fixed and that they are no longer getting it at this price. I tried it yesterday with no luck. YMMV might even be a stretch.....

I think the key here is the "brochure", "catalog", "sales flyer", etc., was addressed to me, was in my hand, and the flyer has no disclaimer anywhere within concerning typos. I certainly didn't expect to obtain the receiver, but perhaps what I had in hand overrode any error fixes. Can be the only explaination.

I think you got a good deal. Getting this receiver from a retailer for this price was a good deal. There are plenty of Internet retailers out there selling this receiver at a good price, but many of them want $30+ in shipping fees. It sounds like things were clicking well the day that you picked it up: you caught the issue with the ad and Circuit City was unsuspecting of any major issue with the price, so they sold it as they saw it.

In regards to it being a "dead deal" for us others out there, I wouldn't quite write the deal off. As you have witnessed in many other deals, your mileage varies from store-to-store. If you hear "no" from one salesperson at one location, then visit another one. Or, push you way up the chain of command. Eventually, you'll get a manager that will care to keep you as a customer and will honor the price for you. At $299, Circuit City is probably still making a profit on the receiver - it's just not as large of a profit as they would have received at full price.

I'm with Badluck--I tried this in Topeka with no luck. They had several correction flyers posted. Sales guy said they sold one at $299 then the notifications went up. On the other hand you might luck out and get a nice manager. I ended up getting an open box Kenwood 6060 for $265 @ BB.

Not a bad deal - not bad at all on the Kenwood. The 6070 - one level up from yours was reviewed in this month's Sound and Vision magazine. The receiver put out a good amount of power - and the results were not too fudged like some manufacturers do with some of their receivers. Plus, the 6070 fetaures "THX certification" - I'm not too sure how many more bells and whistles it has over yours, though. But the 6070 retails for $599. So, you got a pretty good deal on the 6060.

wje--thanks for the affirmation of my purchase. I hooked it up today and am still tweaking it . No THX but works great for me. I'd certainly recommend it. The Onkyo would have been nice but I am really pleased with the Kenwood.

THX doesn't give much more anyway. Tweaking is the key. Don't overlook the use of the Sound and Vision Home Theater Tune-Up DVD which is sold at your local Best Buy store for $18 - $20. Also, a Radio Shack analog SPL meter used with the tune-up disc will do wonders for getting your system properly configured.

There are so many 'hot deals' out there right now, this forum seems like it used to be about 2 years ago. Actually, the number of deals keep appearing at an overwhelming level that it's hard to keep up with them - without going into debt. I just scored a 1-year-old Denon AVR-3803 for $520 shipped from the original purchaser. Given the fact that the new 3803 is $1,199 and the last 3802 deal was this past summer for $699 new, I feel that I'm getting a great receiver at a great price.

The CC by UCLA in Westwood still haven't correct the mistake. I just walked out with one for $299 plus tax. They still show 3 left in their inventory when I left. If you don't have the ad, they have them on your right side when you walk in. It's the holiday ad, not their regular ad.

This would be a great deal for someone who lives in the area. Heck, even if you don't need it, but it and hit Ebay - with the receiver still sealed, people are getting $399 - $427 as "buy it now" prices. Might be a good way to pick up $75 - $100+ quickly. Plus, people are charging $36.00 for shipping. Using FedEx Ground, this receiver should only run about $20.00 (tops!) to get from the West coast to the East coast - making you another $16.00 off the shipping.

Having had the opportunity to touch an Integra 9.2 this weekend left me with a good impression. The beast weighed 49 Lbs. and featured 130 watts to 7 channels. All I can say is, WOW! But, the $2,000 price tag was a bit much more than I'd be willing to spend.

Getting back to the SR600, if that thing had pre-outs, $299 would be a mondo killer deal. Pair it with a good 5 channel amp that puts out 130 watts per channel for about $800 and you'd have a killer deal -- and manage to get yourself evicted from your current residence. Unfortunately, the pre-outs are only included with the SR700 and up.

If someone is nice enough to pick up the Onkyo reciever at Circuit City for the $300 price we can make a deal. I will let you keep more than half the msn dollar reward which should be $65. I will simply pay your purchase price + shipping + tax less $30. I will also give u any travel coupon u want that I have. Please pm.

Just when to B@M CC and picked me up one for 299.99. Ironically when i walked in and checked the bulletin Board for price mistakes, they had a correction posted BUT it was something about tony hawk and not the receiver. Got a rep to get me the receiver and ring it up, whipped out the catalog that was at the pickup counter and pointed out the price. Rep said, "That price is wrong and we sent out a flier reguarding that" I didnt push the issue and walked out with a frown. As i get to the street outside the door the guy yells me down and says the manager will approve it. W00T! Just wanted to say its still out there so if you still want it GO!!

BTW - i think i will be returning it cause its the same as my current receiver's quality

P.S. I refused to join the forum earlier cause i only had hotmail email thats why this is my first post lol :|

This deal is still alive. I ordered on line and used my MSN wallet to get the 20% discount. Went to the store to pick it up and got the price match from the CSR at the pickup counter. I showed her the catalog with the $299.99 price and she said "It's a good thing you noticed that, that is alot off the normal price".

There are a number of posts over at that large wallet place of other guys doing the same thing.

I did this deal on Thurday.

I was out of the store in about 8 minutes. When I asked for the PM, they did it without hesitation.

My wife and I were in shock over how easy it was.........

What's your budget? The Denon AVR-1803/AVR-883 will put out more watts than the SR600 receiver from Onkyo. The Denon is rated @ 80, but probably puts out closer to 65. The Onkyo is also rated at 80, but puts out 34. The Yamaha HTR-5560 only puts out 27. :Q - Keep in mind though, that if you are only running satellite speakers, have a good subwoofer and your room is not overly-large, these wattages will be enough to get some good volume. Granted, it might fall a little short of "reference levels" when watching movies. However, I don't think my ears could tolerate a whole DVD movie in my house at reference levels - because that's damn loud.

Actually, the Onkyo DOES put out 80w/ch in surround mode. Unfortunately, what the "tester" on AVFroums did not do is run the receiver to 1% THD, which is where Onkyo specs the surround output of 80w/ch@ 1% THD, which is at the point of audibility.

The test results were actually published at the Home Theater Forum. The tester didn't publish the results. The owner of the receiver paid to have the tests conducted and then reported the results back on the forum. When testing is conducted, wattages are being measured until the point of "clipping" occurs. Whether clipping is 1% THD or 10% THD - clipping will hurt the speakers. If one is buying the SR600 based on their needs of having an actual 80 watts per channel, they will be severly short-changed.

Onkyo does not rate their receivers with "all channels driven" -- those are the key words that you need to look for. Many manufacturers are getting away from this also. Harman Kardon appears to be one of the only manufacturers honestly reporting their power outputs. On paper, their specs seem paltry compared to some of the other receivers - but, hey, at least they are the honest ones.

I'd be interested in reading the thread at AVS Forum where the receiver was tested - and produced 80 watts at 1% THD with ALL channels driven - if you could provide the link for me. Thanks!

Run quick to CC and get a set of Onkyo HT500's for $250. If you bought a set for $300 like myself just PM it. Great sound for the buck. They sound better than my PM 5.1's. Obviously they are bigger than the Klipsch but they look great around my HDTV.
