Hey, I'm Canadian eh, and I would like to know if any of you other Canucks know of a good online Computer parts site that likes the Candian dollar. There must be some sites that are comparable to our USA counterparts.

Team Canada is going to win GOLD at SALT LAKE!! WOOHOO!! YEAH!!

That's hilarious! Canada Computers is where I used to work ages ago. One of my first tech jobs. Ran their service dept. for 2 years. The guy that owned it was a very shady individual though no question there. I don't think I'd be buying anything from them.

I've heard horror stories about the Canada Computers in Kingston. I regularly shop at the Canada Computers in Marham Ontario and haven't had a problem. But man.... the horror stories I've heard lately about that Kingston location! Did you work in that Kingston location Zuni? The owner is notorious for being "shady"

Update
Actually, my dad did buy a Palm from them. Get this usenet discussion and reply from Palm Canada:

<< " Palm only provides new units in sealed boxes with the necessary items
to get you started (Hotsync cradle, manuals, Palm Desktop Software CD).
OEM product is typically handhelds as a standalone and then they charge
you separately for the cradle and you don't get software and manuals.
This is NOT how Palm supplies their product and we don't know where
these retailers are sourcing the product as it is not through the normal
authorized distribution channels. As well, we provide a one year
warranty on our product (when purchased in the packaging it was shipped
out of manufacturing in) - if you require any repair within the first
year and it is verified that it was OEM you won't get the full warranty
period. The pricing they offer is usually attractive. We are well aware
of Canada Computers but they are not one of our named accounts.
Regards,
Palm Canada "

Hello,

I recently purchased a Palm m505 that was offered as a new (not
refurbished), "OEM version". It is sold wrapped in a bubble-blister bag
at the price of CDN$469.00, which is currently $160.00 less than market
price of $629. It came with a retail-boxed USB cradle, and nothing else:
no manual, user guide, warranty card, or CD.

My question is: are these truly new units, or reconditioned? Does Palm
offer reconditioned units to retailers?
>>

The thing is, my dad's Palm he bought from them has been working flawlessly (knock on wood). But it wasn't a sealed unit - it was out of box with the cradle as a sealed unit.

I've ordered 5 times from NCIX in the past year but wont anymore due to their poor packaging. Complained every time and even took pics last couple times but they just brush it off. Had 2 hard drives go bad in a couple months too. They do have good prices and a great site though.

There's deals in Ottawa and they are great to deal with in person and have an active mailorder department.

GL, Zuni,

I too frequent the CC in Kingston. I swear, the mafia! I'm almost certain.. shady indeed.

Oh well, the prices are dead on.
I've had a few problems with them, but overall you just can't beat em.

I buy stuff at the local Canada Computers in Toronto. A few of the guys there are actually very knowledgeable, which is a big surprise for the stores around there. The prices are are good, but sometimes Sonnam's are better.

Both the above named stores have 15-20% restocking fees and I think won't return cash, just credit. I just bought Firewire card from Canada Computers and it doesn't work with my PC. But they told me right up front about the restocking fee, so I have no probs paying the 7 bux. (Defective parts are free RMAs, but I can't be bothered to run home and try a replacement of the same model, over $7.) Luckily they sell several other brands of Firewire cards and they actually have lots in stock, so I can swap for them instead. I'll tell you how that goes. However, I've only ever purchased in store. Dunno about online.

My dept. got roughly $4000 worth of equipment from sonnam. They were polite despite the fact that it took us a month to actually pay them. (Government institutional purchasing dept.) However again, I've never purchased from them online.

www.pccanada.com is another store. They seem fairly efficient online, but the only time I ordered online from them I got a Linksys router. It came, seemed to work as a switch, but refused to run as a router. They took the RMA no questions asked, but I actually physically drove to the store for the RMA, since they're in town.

I agree that Ncix has poor packaging. I have made purchases from them on several occasions and the packaging is always crap. I got a mobo, mouse, 2 gamepads a couple of weeks ago and there wasn't any peanuts or anything except a bit of bubble wrap around the gamepads. You could hear the whole box rattle. I haven't had any problems with their components as of yet, but this could be due to the fact that I didn't order a hard drive or something more delicate.

I would suggest these places in Canada: Ncix, BigFootComputers,Anitec, PC Canada, A-Power, Atic.

There are alot of places to look for merchants, but I found Ncix, Atic, and Anitec to be some of the better ones in Canada. If you have a particular city you want to look in, go to Canada Computes and you can find a listing for merchants in particular cities or provinces of Canada.

I like out of province since you don't have to pay for PST

That's a savings of 8%... however, you do have to pay for shipping...

No, but I can describe how I received my hard drive and DVD drive. They were tossed into a box filled about a third of the way with styrofoam chips. They were just banging into each other all the way here. Sound like good packing?

Hey guys, great thread. Here are my contributions:

  • Razor Computers (click Full Price List in top-right corner) - Excellent pricing, online-only setup although you can do pickups in person to save on shipping. Like many online stores they don't actually keep much in stock, so expect a 1 or 2 day delay just in ordering before shipment. I've bought from them before by COD through e-mail and will recommend.
  • Advantage Computers - Been to this one in person, small but awesome company. I picked up a new CPU (retail) there a while ago for way below what other stores anywhere in Canada were offering for, went as smooth as you please. Didn't do the online thing.
  • Greytech - Has gotten over $2000 CAN of my business before and will continue to be pretty much the only place I trust to send good friends to when they want a system put together (I take my referrals seriously). They've been around forever and are incredibly reliable, both online and in person. 5-star company.
  • Bigfootcomputers.com - If you've been around for a while in these forums, you know that these guys are pretty much #1 to buy special cooling and case mods from in the GTA region, if not all of Canada. Met the guy in charge in person, talk to him on ICQ and see him at ComputerFests every once in a while. Other than his affinity for Ratzpads (fUnc pads rule j00!) he's a great and trustworthy guy to shop from online.

Had no idea that you might be Canadian, Zuni. Take a look at my sig and see if you can make it if you still live in the area.

Just once, last September I got a CDRW and a stick of RAM, no real problems or complaints.
Though the "Micron" Ram is actually Xerox, it works fine. I've never needed service or a return though.

My review from below link:
anonymous [ Price: 9, Service: 5, Site: 5 ] Sep 16 2001

"Good prices and reasonable delivery times. The service is minimal, no reply to an email and no order confirmation, tracking number or anything like that. Okay on the phone. Website is updated frequently, but quite lacking, also it would be nice to be able to order online with a credit card"
