Only 1GB Recognised by Windows

Hey everyone.
I have 2 x 1GB Corsair Dominator XMS2-8500 1066 Mhz DDR2 RAM.
The system only boots up with one stick so I thought that I got a dud.
However, on a whim, I just stuck the "bad" stick in while windows is running and launched CPU-Z and it recognises the two sticks,
and the fields in the SPD tab are identical for both.
Is this normal and also is there something I can do to bring the bad stick to life because RMA is not an option.

Putting the stick in while WINDOWS IS RUNNING!?!? Yeah, thats not normal. Bad idea.

You might be putting them in the wrong slots on the motherboard. Look at your manual to determine the correct slots to use for proper dual-channel operation.

The computer will not boot with the bad stick, by itself or with the other stick in any of the slots. I haven't asked about dual channel. I asked whether it's normal for
RAM that appears to be faulty to show up in CPU-Z with all the info as a properly working one and also what can I do to repair this faulty stick.
Hope this clears it up.

Sounds like RMA time

But seriously, never mess around with ram while the system has power, you very easily could have fried something. The most significant thing I'm willing to do while the system is running is unplugging fans

You're a daredevil (or careless)

You figured that taking a 25% or better shot at killing the motherboard was an acceptable way to answer whether you had a bum module?

The SPD has its own circuit and pins on the module. So it is entirely possible for the module to be dead while the SPD circuit is working fine. CPU-Z and similar utilities just regurgitate whatever the SPD is returning via SMBUS/WMI/ACPI.

daredevil? haha
Definitely not something you would want to advise anyone to do. I was quite frustrated after paying for this memory kit and one stick being faulty. So I had a blonde moment.
Thankfully nothing seems wrong with the board ATM.
I don't live in the US so RMA is not an option for me since the cost of shipping it back to the US via my freight forwarder would be more than a new kit would cost.
Just glad it wasn't one of the more costly items like the PSU or GPU.
Thanks for the info everyone and I guess that the final verdict is that this stick is dead.
