Only connecting two computers: Gigabit crossover cable or Gigabit switch?

you need a straight thru cable for gig-2-gig connections.

Gig ethernet uses all 4 pairs of the cable and as such all 4 pairs need to be crossed. A "ethernet crossover cable" only crosses pairs 2 and 3 leaving 1 and 4 alone. Ain't gonna work with gig ethernet.

Actually, the three different gigabit Ethernet boards that I've personally used all autosense the connection and work just fine with no cross-over.

Actually, the three different gigabit Ethernet boards that I've personally used all autosense the connection and work just fine with no cross-over.

which is why a regular crossover cable won't work and one needs a straight-thru

I was responding your the comment: "Gig ethernet uses all 4 pairs of the cable and as such all 4 pairs need to be crossed." It appeared that you were saying you needed a gigabit crossover cable for it to work, I've never even seen a gigabit crossover cable...
