NTFS is a proprietary format. Blame Microsoft.
(Also, HFS+ is a proprietary format. Blame Apple. Vive l' Open Standards)
Third party solutions are reverse-engineered, and haven't always worked super-well. If you can get one (like NTFS-3G + FUSE) to work, well, more power to you.
I still format external drives as FAT32. Heheheh.
I was never able to get FUSE working properly so just I bought ParagonNTFS and called it a day. I've been using the same version of this software on 10.5 through 10.8.
OP, if you plugged hard drive with an HFS+ partition into a Windows machine, it won't even be able to read that partition. At least with OSX, you can get it to read NTFS partitions.
