i have read an explanation online, posted by an account on reddit, so be aware that the following may contain Bullshit(tm):

the reason was never a ban; it was the OF allows credit card users to set up bank-to-bank direct payments between channel owners and fans, which cuts into he card providers profits.
Card companies started enforcing TOS and OF doing a press release saying they would ban porn was just them showing the belly and proving to the card companies that they are willing to play ball.

what happens next is to be seen.

There is definitely a power play behind all that and probably will come back one day or another. But if we stop losing fans because of the fear, thats good. Over 50% of fans join for multiple months discount and when they do not trust it will be around, they won't.
