Onvia is charging for shipping now and I also noticed they raised prices $5 to $10. I used to order from them all the time just for the free ground shipping. Sigh...

Yeah, I'm sad too ... apparently onvia was bought out by another company, which is why free shipping is gone and prices are higher.

Vicken....

I hear ya. I'm building a system for my friend now so I had him sit down next to me while I was checking out the prices online, and I told him that I would be getting the heavy stuff from onvia so that he wouldn't have to pay for shipping. Wouldn't you know it, the very next day they jack their prices up and start charging shipping. So now I (rather he) ended up paying $35 in Shipping and Handling on a case and monitor and that really pisses me off.

When it's all said and done I'll probably have spent the same amount on these two items even after S&H, but that's still a whole lot of money just on shipping.

If you want heavy stuff like monitors, cases, etc and dont want to pay shipping, Outpost is good. They have good prices, not quite as low as Onvia WAS but good, and have FREE OVERNIGHT shipping on everything.

Onvia's free shipping tends to come and go. It's like a special. If you wait a number of weeks they will be running the "free shipping" promotion again.

I bought a monitor from them a year ago, and had to pay shipping. A week or so ago I was checking out a product at Onvia, and they had free shipping. It comes and goes.

The free shipping isnt really a promotion, its kind of a long term thing since they've been running it for so long. They just took it off, I think its for good.

They were in serious financial trouble in Q4 2000, which lead to them outsourcing the "Buy Products" division to someone else and focusing on small business services. Free shipping was listed as a "limited time" special forever, it became a standard... until now. Onvia was great while they lasted, but now they dont stand out as anything special pricewise.

If Onvia leaves there prices this high, and still manages to charge shipping, and offers no coupons, they will surely lose plenty of customers. They already lost me as a customer, and I am sure all of you are right behind me, till the old Onvia comes back.

I notice Onvia was also taken off CNET Shoppers low price finder system. Perhaps new ownership means they need to be re-evaluated?

I know noone wants to hear it, but many of the great internet deals of yesteryear will be a thing of the past... Companies have to make a profit, and their hayday of trying to break into the market, and letting the investors foot the bill are over... Onvia, has now changed, and We'll probably see many other online resellers do the same... Time has come for profitability, we knew this party wouldn't last forever... but it was fun.

Canadian customers seem to be hit hard by this. We didn't have too much to choose from to begin with, now even less. Not that Onvia.ca was anything special, far from it IMO (terrible inventory system, lot of products out of stock, slow to update prices after price cuts; e.g. CPUs, video cards), but they were one of the bigger e-commerce sites available for Canadians. And then there were the coupons, although none had been issued for Canadians for a while.

To me, what they've just done seems ridiculous and non-sensical (if there intent was to attract new customers). Shipping charges now apply, fine, that's acceptable. But, their prices have gone up significantly. Some egs. from casual searching.

'Before' prices are approximate figures in Cdn $ based on my recent memory, in some cases, prices were checked just a couple of days ago.

ATI Radeon 64 DDR VIVO Retail: Before-->$390 After-->$445.99
ATI Radeon 32 DDR Retail: Before-->$258 After--->$291.99
ATI AIW Radeon 32 DDR Retail: Before-->$409 After--->$480.99

Elsa Gladiac GF2 Ultra Retail: Before-->$800 (already high, but at least inline with the $500 pricetag seen on some U.S. sites) After-->$939.99!!:Q

Intel PIII 933 Retail SECC2: Before--->unknown, but buy.com sells it for $403.95U.S. After--->$729.99
(I also noticed that they no longer list the AMD Athlon and they only list a select few Intel CPUs)

Antex KS282: Before-->$105 After--->$132.99
Antex SX830: Before-->$135 After--->$159.99

I could go on but I digress...
In the above egs., prices have gone up by about 20%, and this is not even counting shipping, which of course was 'waived' previously. I have to say that IMO, notwithstanding so-called "brokerage fees" and the perhaps increased cost of doing business in Canada, their previous prices without coupons were average at best (assuming the product was in stock to begin with), although certainly better than places like Future Shop and Computer City we have here in Canada. Now, it is possible that they are just beginning to build up their 'new' site (both U.S. and Canada) and haven't finished listing all the components they intend to list, but I'm skeptical at this point. Further, the price hikes seem unprecedented.

I've called them a few times recently, and twice the entire sales team have been in a meeting (third time altogether). I guess they were discussing this transition at Onvia. BTW, the company that seems to have taken over (for Onvia.ca anyway) seems to be Insight.
This is mentioned in their customer service area. Talk about too many middle men adding very little to no value to the end user.

Well, I guess I won't be utilizing their services anymore. C'est la vie.

Guess they lost me.

CA tax and shipping really bites

Now it's just like buying a buy.com with higher prices, can't really think of a reason to shop at onvia anymore...

Onvia sucks? I just got a terrific deal on an Optiquest 19" monitor(Love it!) from them, and although they have raised prices and don't offer the free shipping anymore, look around, dot com's are dying everyday, if thats what it takes to stay in business, I say more power to them. I just hope the Buy.com, Onvia, Outpost, Overstock stay alive so that there is competition and prices stay low. Believe me, if we were the only ones shopping online, all the dot coms would have died long ago.
