Ooops I did it again. Getting another X5

Realized the trusty ole E53 X5 4.6is is getting a little long in the tooth. Over the last 4+ years it has been rock solid and reliable. The only problem, pretty much expeceted, has been a transmission replacemement under warranty at around 40k miles. Heck, even drove with the toasted torque converter for a week. Other than that, it has not been in the shop for anything other than routine maintenence. Since everything was priced in, I haven't had to pay a penny for upkeep.

Anyway, after poking around the offerings on the market, I settled on the new 4.8i. Placed my order and dropped a deposit. Barring any issues, I should be getting the new ride in early January.

I know I am going to hear the usual.
"You should have gotten a FX/MDX/Q7/ML/GL/Jeep/Cayenne/FJ/Range Rover because..." or "SUVs suck. You could have gotten a 5-series/E-class/Impreza/A6 because..."

Well, I test drove a few of them wasn't impressed by any of them. Plus the underground garage in my condo complex has some size restrictions with height being a major issue. Just last week a guy in his new FJ Cruiser needed help removing the roof rack because it could not clear a gate. I also need a vehicle that can handle New England winters but is not a serious rockpounder.

Tuffgirl: Remember RT16 in Wellesley becomes one lane in each direction and the speed limit is 35MPH. Resist the temptation to do 85MPH again.

I'm getting the new 07.

I did consider the 550i but the crappy Massachusetts roads, especially in metro Boston, would shred the underside within a couple of years. Quite a few people have damaged their cars getting over the raised tracks along Comm. Ave.

I was told the transmission in mine was designed for the E39 5-series sedan and near the limit of what it could handle back in 02. The newer transmission from 03 on did not have the same issues. Didn't matter to me. Got a nice loaner for a day and not one bit of hassle. The dealer even dropped the loaner off at work and handled getting my vehicle to the dealer.

You talking about the new '07 that is 408lb heavier than before? The new MDX seems like the obvious choice.

Yea, its heavier but there is a little more power and a better transmission compared to the one I'm trading in. I recall the curb weight on a 4.6is is more than a 4.4i so it's not a huge gain. Plus the new vehicle is larger overall and there are more bells and whistles to keep a geek happy.

Pretty much expected? What the hell?

Rock solid and reliable...but ehh, let's just not factor in the TRANNIE FAILING!!!!!!!!. If this had been a GM or Ford, people would be going ape sh!t.

I was told when I bought it that I might wreck one or two transmissions during my time with the vehicle depending on how hard I pushed it. Well, I did push it hard and burnt one up. At the time, my commute was 35 miles each way and most of it was on open highway. Lots of time was spent doing sudden high speed dashes. The Dinan software upgrade probably helped things along. I have never been left stranded and the transmission was replaced no questions asked. My service advisor at the dealer even encouraged me to nuke another one.

This is becuase his crew gets paid on the hour. Almost anyone in the garage would jump at the prospect of a bunch of OT for a tranny swap.

BTW: hi. long time no see.

this reminds me, don't buy used BMWs.

one of my friends had a 2000 745i and he also ate up a tranny.

Yes, long time no see. Been busy at work and starting up a side business with some friends.

I'm very sure the dealer makes out like a bandit. They also tell me BMW is interested on how the part failed so they can beef things up in the next generation. I did a quick check with a mechanic friend and he told me a transmission and torque converter was $6K+ not including labor.

I'd have to agree. These vehicles usually get heavily thrashed by their owners. Ask Tuffgirl about her near miss and what she did to avoid a collision.

I'd probably only get a Range or the previous generation Mercedies G if I was getting an SUV. Pretty much the only SUV I'd consider is besides those is the X5. I simply just don't like the way most of SUVs look.

Your money though, I'm a huge fan of bimmers. If things pan out the way I'm hoping in the next few years I'll be getting one myself.

X5 is sexy, but I like the look of the new Range Rovers much better. Probably another $20k though. The X5s in the 50s right?
