I made a mistake 2 days ago and forgot my 400$ 27 inch curved 2560x1440 144hz monitor is freesync ready.

I currently run a 4790k, 16gb ram, and a r9-290 Upgrade from a 12 year old 1680x1050 LCD lol... Obviously my 290 cant handle 2k resolutiob very well getting like 30-40 fps in most games at medium details.

So i decided to check out current video cards and saw vega was 550 for the vega 56 and 600 for the vega 64.. then saw nvidis released a 1070ti and it was only 470$ ( im outdated on current tech ok lol)

Checking out reviews i noticed the 1070ti is the same in performance as the vega 64 it seems.. if not slightly better in most games except for i vulkan games. So thats why i jimped on it because its much cheaper for the same performance ? but i forgot i had a freesync monitor

So i bought the 1070ti paid for next day shipping.. when i got it i realized oops i forgot my monitor has freesync and nvidia doesnt support it.

I played witcher 3. warhammer 2 total war. subnautica and they all had screen tearing.. vsync fixed it though and oddly fps didnt cap at 60 ? it stayed in the 70-100 range i was getting..

BUT when i had freesync on my 290 and compared it to vsync i noticed how much smoother freesync was so thats why im torn plus it seems dumb to me to buy s 400$ monitor like i have.. and not use freesync.....

Buutt when i used freesync on my 290 i noticed i had screen flickering.. like white flickering.. some research pulled up that its common on amd cards to do this.. but others noted its only if fps gets under your freesync range.. which makes sense

Soooo sorry for the long post... My question is should i return this to amazon get my 505$ total back and spend 130$ more (30 is tax) and get the Vega 64 for my new 400$ freesync monitor i bought 2-3 months ago

The vega 64 isnt slower then 1070ti is it ?

I've never experienced flicker with Freesync, if you have a Freesync monitor and want to take advantage of it- the Vega 56/64 will do. The 1070Ti packs a punch on bang per buck but really, do you think you're going to really notice a difference when playing games between the two cards since both would be able to make use of the 144Hz.

56 and 1070ti are similar in performance outside of some UE4 games. The 64 is usually slightly faster. We're talking 10% performance swing from one end to the other. Vsync didn't cap your fps at 60 because it caps it at your monitor's refresh rate at 144hz unless you set it to something else. I've been running a 1070 on a 1440p 144hz freesync monitor for a couple years now. I wouldn't switch atm. You already have the card in hand. It is for the most part a better card. Just lower a couple settings and get over 100 fps and you should be fine. If I was going to be sending that card back I'd be looking at a 1080ti. Then again I shudder at paying $500 for a 1070ti in 2018 when I paid $350 for a 1070 in 2016, especially since we should hopefully be seeing new card from Nvidia by the end of the year.

Did you try bumping the refresh up refresh to 90hz? or even 144hz? I'm not really sure that freesync or lack of gsync is your issue..

I almost bit on that card too. I also have a r290x and a 144hz freesync monitor....and am struggling with that same decision. Granted I think with a 1070ti I wouldn't really even need it.

Honestly though, I don't have issues with the 290x oc'd still getting 40-60 at 1440p med settings which is decent enough for me, but yea..getting that itch too.

1070ti is not a bad choice if you want to enjoy decent frame rates and above 1080 resolution, you can keep this with you as most of the games are Nvidia optimized which give you edge on performance.

If you can return the nV card and get comparable perf/$ from an AMD alternative then obviously do it.

But how much extra Freesync is worth to you and whether your monitor will still flicker with better fps isn't something I/we can easily answer. Can you experiment with a more powerful Freesync compatible card before the returns window on the nV card closes? And/Or is the return's policy (and your patience) such that you can try out a few options?

Do you still have the 290? Shirley you can experiment with settings/games and see if the monitor still Freesync flickers with the game running at higher fps?
