God damnit. Mine is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow afternoon. I ordered mine through CompUSA, because they had the higher BingCashBack at the time. Damnit. I guess I'll test it out before I go through the hoops of refunding.

bdub, I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but have you connected both PCI-e power connectors? You should also try uninstalling and reinstalling the card in the PCI-e slot (or try the other slot if you have 2). If you're using two monitors, try booting with just one, and try that one monitor in each DVI port. You could also boot into VGA mode. That will allow you to install your drivers but force it to 640x480 resolution in case the higher resolution is the problem. Once you install the drivers and reboot into normal mode, you might find that it works just find.

In other words your problems might be solved by normal troubleshooting and might not at all be related to the problems of this slow batch of XFX 4890s.

Thanks Kalrith.

I didn't want to bore people with all the troubleshooting i went through but I had tried everything you suggested last night (in some cases 3+ times) except the booting into VGA mode before giving up. I suppose I will give that a shot today.

*edit* Kalrith, your idea of booting into VGA mode allowed me to get the drivers installed! Vantage scores incoming as soon as i get some more free time.

At ~120 usd (bing + ebillme), all I want is it to be at least on par with a 4870.

I passed up a new 4870 1GB for $110 + shipping for this deal, so I'm not going to settle for less performance than what a 4890 should give. Basically if I get what bdub did and post an 8k Vantage gpu score, then this thing is going back. I'd much prefer to get it replaced with a better version, but I'll at least fight for a refund.

My main reason for getting this was because nothing is going to be able to match the 4890's performance at this price for quite a while. However, if this only performs like a 4870, then I could've either gone with one of those or a 5770 for the same price, or I could've just waited to buy a card altogether.

Edit: bdub, I'm glad that worked for you! I'm looking forward to your scores (I think).

I see your point, I jumped on this after seeing those 5830 scores and prices . I just hope TD doesn't try to avoid a refund and make me go through XFX first.

Just successfully finished a vantage run after to 2 lockups mid run with massive artifacts throughout all runs. I even get occasional artifacts on my windows desktop. Shockingly the card scored just over 10k.

Considering the GPU clocks were set to factory defaults at 850/975 and I have such terrible artifacts, this card is definitely defective.

I don't even care about temps or attempting to underclock it at this point. I will contact XFX and see if they can stand behind their product and commit to an RMA for a reference card. If not, TigerDirect has told me they will accept returns and pay for shipping. Solid customer service from TigerDirect.

Forgot to post my system specs.
EVGA 680i SLI
Core 2 Duo E8400 (default clock for this run)
4GB ram
Antec Neo650 power supply
Intel X25-M 80gb G2 SSD
2x 750GB Samsung F1 Raid0
24" display running at native 1920x1200

That looks to be the case. When looking at your "Recent Order History", it says in red letters "Returns NOT Accepted". Followed by: This item is exclusively supported by the manufacturer and cannot be returned due to manufacturer restrictions. Please contact XFX at 800-880-3225.

And considering I ordered a 4890AZDF and will most likely be recieving a 4890AZDFC, I won't be getting what I ordered. I'll put up a stink, if I don't like the card I get...

My XFX 4890 has been shipped, but won't arrive until Monday. I sent in the ebillme rebate already too. I'm already selling my 4830 on ebay.... So it seems like I won't be gaming for a little while. On the other hand, I won't have much else to do but focus on finals! XD

Well, if it's any consolation, several people in that OCN thread successfully got XFX to replace their cards with the reference design. I still don't know if I'll even be getting one since they're backordered now.

After talking with both XFX and TigerDirect, I have good news and bad news.

Bad news first. XFX does not have reference design 4890s on hand for RMA replacement. I asked about the XXX version as an alternative/upgrade and they said that the limited numbers they do have are for RMAs for customers who bought the XXX version and it would be highly unlikely that I would receive one of those.

Good news. I explained the situation to the representative at TigerDirect and they are very understanding and supportive. I have a return authorization number and a UPS prepaid label in my inbox. They even went so far as to report the situation to the product manager so they can work with XFX to get a more accurate product description and photo.

Well, I just received a backorder email from TD, and it says I can call and cancel or substitute an item. I think I'm going to call and cancel. I would have to postmark my ebillme rebate by next Friday, and I really don't want to go through all this hassle just to get a card that performs no better than a 4870.

There are a couple 5770s for the same price, and I could substitute one of those; however, I think I'm just going to wait and see what deals show up in a month or so.

Edit: It's been canceled! I was really looking forward to the solid performance of a real 4890, but I'm certainly glad I escaped having to deal with a crap 4890. Good luck to all of you!

If you've already paid your ebillme bill, then I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use it again. If you haven't paid ebillme yet, then I think you're good.

I'm not sure on either of these statements though. Ebillme has a live chat, so you probably should ask them.

Refurbs suck IMO.

Nice threadcrapping.

The issues involved in this thread have absolutely nothing to do with this being a refurb and everything to do with TD shipping the wrong card. If they shipped the RB-HD489AZDF that they were supposed to, then we'd all be jumping up and down like little schoolgirls. Unfortunately that didn't happen.

I'm just glad I didn't wast MY time on this deal and decided to wait for the prices of the new ones to come back down to reality. Then you know what your getting.

Actually, if TD can claim to sell an AZDF and ship a ZDFC, then the same thing could happen with a new one. As already stated, the problem isn't that this is a refurb; it's that TD didn't ship the card that they claimed to be selling.

And, if you hate refurbs, then why waste YOUR time posting in a hot-deals thread about refurbs. It's akin to hating XFX, opening this thread, and posting "XFX sucks IMO."

I posted earlier in the thread that IMO it was too many hoops to jump through to get the price. Now how many people are going to have to go through even more trouble returning crap they didn't want?

I repeat, I hate refurbs. Sometimes you get lucky, but mostly not.

putting "IMO" in your post doesn't necessarily mean you are not threadcrapping.

Buy them books and send them to school. What do you get? I bunch of opinated know-it-alls with no reading comprehension. I just post the truth the way I see it. IMO, YO don't mean squat.
