Hi everyone,

My first post despite being a reader of anandtech for over 10 years as well as an occasional lurker in the forums.

After reading the 5830 article I finally decided to upgrade my 8800gt. I had been holding out to see if prices of the new 58xx series cards were going to drop but that hasn't happened.

Always looking for the most performance for the $ I can't ignore the deal I found for an XFX 4890 mfg part#: RB-HD489AZDF. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5279719&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE

*edit* possibly another $25.50 off with BCB = $144.50?
Also Amazon has this available for purchase from tiger and you can get $40 off if you sign up for their credit card offer.

I did all the homework I could to ensure I wasn't buying a refubished HD489AZDFC that uses a non-reference PCB reported to have performance problems. (source: http://www.overclock.net/ati/634248-xfx-4890-bad-batch-discussion.html )

It appears that newegg sold them at some point. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150379&cm_re=XFX_HD489AZDF-_-14-150-379-_-Product

From the very detailed images Newegg has it appears to be a reference PCB. If this is indeed a reference 4890 with a 12 mo warranty for 169.99 shipped then I think its a pretty smoking deal.

Has anybody bought one of these or heard of them? Thoughts?

***UPDATE***
Buyer beware.
I have since received the card and it is NOT a reference design and appears to be the very same card referenced in the overclock.net thread. See my post on page 2 of this post for detailed pics and more info.

nice first post! You should probably add that Bing Cashback for Tigerdirect right now is 15%, which knocks off another $25.50 off this!

I'm still uncertain about paying so much for a refurb.

As was I which led to about 2 hours of digging through posts regarding XFX 4890 and the models which used non-reference PCBs with inferior VRMs and cheaper/louder/less-effective coolers. Provided this is indeed what is pictured and has been tested to be functioning 100% and comes with a 12 month warranty, I feel reasonably confident in buying refurbished.

I bought it (via Amazon) and we will see. If I get a PoS i will report it so nobody else has to suffer. ETA March 3rd.

Just curious - why'd you go through Amazon? Then you don't get the 15% off. I'm on the fence on this one. I am gaming with an HD 4850 on my 1980x1200 monitor. I know an HD 4890 is a pretty big step up, but I really don't have complaints now with my HD 4850 - I'm playing A list games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, etc. no problem. So rather than upgrade now to a 4890, I'm kind of inclined to wait until wider availability of the new DX11 cards pushes prices down, both of the 4xxx series and the 5xxx series. I don't know, though, this is a pretty great price...

Tigerdirect through amazon is cheaper for shipping when UNDER $100 but more expensive when OVER $100. Why did you go through amazon?

I'd take a chance on this card for $124.50 if I didn't have to jump through so many hoops to get that price. I'll juat wait a few months for the 5850's to come down in price instead.

Well, I did decide to get the card. The $25.50 BCB is already in my email, so at most I'll have to pay $144.50. I should be able to get the $20 MIR from ebillme as well.

kalrith, have you used ebillme before? I have seen some negatively slanted remarks on their service (as in how long it takes the payment to go thru, etc)

too bad BCB on TD is down to 8.3%. CC has the same card with 15% BCB, but you lose ebillme with that. They do have this 'preferred account' thingy with a $20 discount, which is like their credit card if my understanding is correct - I am gonna have to pass on that

$144.50 still sounds good though, provided you don't get the crippled version.

I've never used it before (which is good, because the rebate is only good for first-time users), because I don't currently have online bill pay since it's not free through my bank. However, I noticed that there's a walk-in location practically across the street from my work, so I made this deal planning on paying the bill on Monday during my lunch break. We'll see how that goes.

I think it's going to be a long time before a $144 card matches the performance of the 4890 and even longer before a $124 card does (assuming my MIR goes through).

konakona, I just found this $25 MIR on ebillme. It looks like it applies to any retailer and should let you get the 4890 from CC for $119.50 AR & BCB.

Edit: Ignore my first edit. If you search for "tom tom," you can still get 15% BCB at circuitcity.com.

thanks bud, I really appreciate it! but the sad thing is circuitcity does not list ebillme as a payment method, only TD does. what a shame
still debating if I should do TD + ebillme or just circitcity. That's a roughly $15 difference. Is that worth the wait/uncertainty/hassle? Still pondering about it

People on slickdeals seem to have had good luck with the ebillme rebates, and they take about 2 months to receive, which is about the same as BCB. BCB is probably a safer bet, especially since you can see the BCB discount right in your order confirmation. However, it is about $14 more.

How much hassle would it be to use ebillme? If you're going to use online bill pay and have fees associated with that or are going to use a walk-in location that will involve using gas to drive to, then take those costs into consideration as well. It certainly is easier to not deal with ebillme, but for me it should only take a few minutes on my lunch break with no extra fees.

I ordered it, earliest that my bank can pay them is 3/2/2010. I placed the order on 2/26/2010. Just hope I can still use the ebillme for 20 bucks since the deadline is 3/1/2010.

Use this $25 MIR instead. Not only is it $5 more, but it doesn't expire until 3/31.

Thanks! I'll be using this one instead. Now if only Microcenter would drop the i7 860 back down to $200, then I'll have a new PC. I'm still running an old AMD 3000 (754 socket) with x800xl

I've used ebillme before with absolutely no issues except that I can't do it again.

Deal is alive again! (sorry, konakona)

TD BCB is back at 15% if you search for motherboard. That brings the price down to $144.50 shipped after BCB. If you haven't used ebillme before, then use that as your payment method and use this $25 MIR making it $119.50 AR and BCB.

Edit: Also, could a mod or the OP please modify the title to the following:
XFX 4890 (refurb) for $119.50 shipped after BCB and ebillme MIR!
I don't want to start a new thread on this deal, but the above title would generate a lot more traffic and allow people to see what an awesome deal this is.
