I don't know the difference between the Sapphire cards, but in general the X800GTO is equivalent to a Nvidia 7600GS in gaming performance. You can buy a 7600GS AGP, but they are more expensive. As another point of reference, the cheapest Nvidia 7600GS AGP on NewEgg is the ASUS N7600GS/HTD/256M GeForce 7600GS 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail for $123.99 + $5.64 shipping.

I don't know anything about current cards. I have a 9800 pro right now running off an A64 2800+ (1.8ghz) with 1gb of ram. I don't plan on building a new rig until a few months after Vista is released so I need a new gfx card to hold me over. What vid card do you guys recommend for under $100. understand I won't be able to handle the newest games at the best resolutions. Or is it even worth upgrading with my current setup? I

Depends on what size monitor you want to use. You don't need much with a 17 or 19". This ain't bad -

GeForce 6600 GT runs as fast as X1600 PRO, and X800 GTO is better than GeForce 6600GT.
So I think the X800 GTO is a better deal.

take a look here and hopefully it will give you some comparisons that will help.

another forum member pointed me to this site, so give Dantzig credit if it helps.

The 7600GS has shader model 3.0, while I don't think the X800s do. Some new games coming out are requiring SM3.0 (notably the new Rainbow 6).

I'm not sure if I should make one more AGP upgrade or just buy a pci-e motherboard along with a video card.

Depending on what you got, if your system is an A64 3200 or below and you want a card better than an X800GTO, then I would simply upgrade.

The next best card would be to an AGP 7800GS or X1950Pro. The 7800GS goes for around $236 or $206AR. And the X1950Pro goes for around $300 currently with no discount in site.

For the $200-$300 you would spend upgrading you video card (which you probably would not be able to carry over into your next upgrade), I would simply buy a $100 A64 3400 combo at NewEgg and a 7600GT or 7900GS for $100/$150.

Financially you can do a slightly slower upgrade (7600GT) and upgrade your mobo/CPU for the same cost. Or you can spend about $50 more to get an equivalent card (7900GS).

The only downside is having to redo your OS and programs, etc.

As for the SM3 shading, to take advantage of it you should get a better card than an X800GTO anyway. In fact, you should get something on par with a 7900GS to take advantage of it.

Based on that chart a 9800Pro and an X800 and X800GT both achieve approx 22GB/s

You forgot to read the specs. Standard X1600 Pros's run at 500/800. This card runs at 575/1200. Big difference......

Is this hot at all? I would want to get 2 as Christmas presents - one to replace a TI4200 in a friend's system and one to replace an aging 9600pro. I would pull the trigger, but I want to be sure that there are no better deals around (especially if they come from nvidia because I'm a linux type of guy )

All the cards appear identical to me in specs differing slightly only in their model#. Any idea why their pricing's different?

Another quick question, what if you receive a card that's DOA or has some sort of visual/graphical defect? What are the chances of receiving a card with those problems? Like are these open boxed cards purchased and returned by previous customers that was experiencing problems with the card?

Thanks

I have no experience in terms of working at a computer store...but here on AT and especially other places where there are more kids - if they can't get the card to overclock they return it as "defective" and hope to get a better one that works. They have some kind of idea that they are deserving of an overclock, and one that doesn't exceed past rated specs is "defective" That is why I would think the majority of parts are returned...

Anyways aside from the fact they are refurb - are they still a good deal for the price?

Thanks for your generalized remarks.

I returned the X800GTO card I received as defective because the entire screen was artifacting at all times, before I even got it up to load drivers. Plus the fact that one of the corners on the card was physically damaged...

That's why I returned the card as defective, had absolutely nothing to do with overclocking potential.

And Newegg open box memory has gotten so terrible too that far more often than not the stick will not even allow the computer to boot up, or when it does, spits out errors in memtest - all at stock speeds.

Used to get a heck of a lot of deals at Newegg's open box section. Now I think they just dump every returned item there without testing them.

I have been debating on what to upgrade my current Radeon 9500pro/9700 128mb card to and I think I am down to this, the xfx 6800xt or the 7600 gs - and right now this looks like the best for the money.

I looked at the open box policy and it said that they may not come with accessories etc - but there isnt really anything else I need is there?

I would just need to clean off my current CAT 6.14 drivers for the 9700 card and then pop it out, pop the X800 in and then DL the new drivers from the ati.amd site right?

If so I think I will go ahead and get it. $85 and free S&H sounds good to me!

I got mine in the mail yesterday, but the card was a dud. Talked to newegg's online reps last night and got my RMA form - sending it back today.

Not sure if I'll get a replacement or a credit though - I dont think these are up on the site anymore so they may be out of stock.

I'll keep ya posted.
