Does anybody actually open carry a fixed blade knife? I was thinking it might be a bad idea because somebody can quickly snatch it and give you a joker smile. Plus I think people will be calling the cops on you.

I thought about a concealed folding knife, but that wouldn't be a quick enough draw.

Not that I actually need one outside of mountain lion country. But I know someone that carries a knife with him wherever he goes

State law for me is <4" unless you're using it for 'sport,' which includes a knife for camping/hiking, plus the obvious hunting/fishing.

Doesn't matter if it's fixed blade or not. I would assume most states are similar as far as fixed/folder having the same blade limit.

Concealed carry is a no-no. I usually have a knife with the pocket clip clearly visible, which I believe is acceptable, depending on who you ask. Your 'intent to go armed' is also a factor. Basically, laws are fucking dumb; but know your particular dumb laws before carrying any kind of weapon, from gun to knife to pepper spray.

Good advice.

I carry a little spring assisted CRKT knife, which is illegal depending on who you ask. Blade is probably about 3 or 3.5". VA state code doesn't look too bad, but it always ends up being to the cop's discretion regardless.

The law here says No, with an exception made for wilderness areas.

I do, however, habitually carry small folders.

Become a Sikh and carry a dagger where you want, when you want. When you whip out the religion card in a western country you can do what you want.

I live in somewhat of a free state, so I just carry a out the front automatic pocket knife.

Goes with me everywhere, very nice and very sharp little knife.

Carrying a fixed blade just seems like a PITA to me, even if it were legal in your area.

I carry a folder with pocket clip daily (currently the Syderco Tenacious), have been doing so for years without issue even in my non-free state. It's more for utility than protection though.

I'd reccomend a TASER C2 over any knife for self defense. Legal in the vast majority of localitie, far more effective as a weapon, and likely won't make the steeple bleet too loud. http://www.taser.com/products/self-defense-products/taser-c2
Yeah I wouldn't carry a knife just for self-defense. I'd rather have a TASER or even pepper spray I think. I carry a knife but it's a (almost always) small folder like a SOG Flash I and just used for utility purposes.

I carry a small fixed blade for defense when I want something extra. You can't beat the speed and strength of a fixed blade knife. Would I carry a Kabar around if I didn't get hassled? For general use, no. It's too much steel for routine work. My Swiss Army is far more useful for my purposes. I'd carry a Kabar for defense though.

Interesting that many places allow guns, but people lose their shit over something like knives. Knives are arms too, and the arbitrary restrictions on them are retarded.

Really haven't seen it at all, but carrying a tactical folder w/pocket clip is common pretty much everywhere. Out in the bush its fine, but wearing a fixed blade in public would probably get you unwanted attention.

i carry a spring assisted folder with a clip on a daily basis, but its more a tool for work than it is for self defense. when i am out in the wild i wear my hunting knife. when i go into urban situations that i am not sure of or comfortable with, i usually have a smallish (like 8" total length) boot knife on my belt that runs horizontal, and under the shirt line so its not readily visible but easily accessible. its a gerber guardian, nicely balanced and all black.

hanoverphist brings up a good point, you can always find a sheath (use Tek Loks too) and just run it horizontal.

I got one of these from my wife a few years ago that I carry everywhere. I love it.

Like was stated earlier you really have to read the laws in your State when determining any knife you're going to carry. Especially if you ever conceal it. Open carry is much more lax in my State and when I go walking with my dogs I can carry say my Kabar. If I put my shirt over the hilt and hide it that would be a crime. If you're going to carry a knife that's only permissible for open carry then you'll have to be aware of yourself and needing to keep it visible at all times.

Day to day I use the Spyderco Dragonfly.

Short enough not to scare people, long enough to get real work done.

If you're gonna carry for personal defense, might as well fuck their shit up good.

But I'd rather have my 'general purpose' Kershaws.
