open port question

Hello

here is my setup.

computer 1 = server (lets say 192.168.100.100)
computer 2 = workstation (192.168.100.101)

I currently have 12 ports open on my router that are forwarded to my server only (192.168.100.100). How susceptible am I to something getting into my server? (ie: viral infection or some of that automated crap floating about).

is is possible for a automated script or something to breach my server then travel through the network to my workstation?

Simply put, any open port can be a security risk. You must be sure you monitor usage and set firewall rules to keep unwanted users out.

As for viruses and, that depends on the port and what your serving on that port. If you have a vunerable service accepting connections it
could easily be hacked, or spread a vrus (windows shares specifically?). The best way to prevent that is to keep checking for security updates, watch your logs for misuse and scan for viruses.

Any time you open a port you are taking a risk.

Open Ports are a doorway for Hackers. Hackers are mainly after big cooperate systems.

Unless you are a teenager that is involved in ?Server Fights? with your friends, hackers are not you main problem.

As concern Home users open ports is the least of the risks.

Viruses, Spyware, Bad Attachments, Browser Hijackers, Winsock Thrashers, Worms, etc. do not usually come from server open ports.
