Is it possible to only download openoffice writer or only intall openoffice writer?

I'm using Debian... Is there an installer though?

Also, how well does openoffice support the RTF format and DOC format? Can it save in RTF?

No.

There are no deb or rpm packages. Just download the tarball and follow the instructions to install the applications.

Also, how well does openoffice support the RTF format and DOC format? Can it save in RTF?It supports DOC pretty well. All my Word files open and save with no problems at all. Which is pretty amazing. Granted, they're not the most complex documents, but still... Don't know about RTF.

I don't know how MS Word-compatible it is, but you might want to try out AbiWord.

I would consider abiword too . Basically the last thing stopping from switching over predominantly to linux (gotta have windows to play games and use the scanner) is an office program that will let me save and open RTF files and preferably open word docs too. If anyone else can attest to this from experience with ANY linux office software I'd be interested...

OK, I just tried saving, opening, editing, etc. in rtf format with OpenOffice Writer. Seemed to work just fine. I also converted some .doc files into .rtf and that worked fine, too.

Thanks for the research! I guess I'll get it, although I'm a bit worried about the bloat considering I only need writer.

P.S. I tried Abiword and for some reason it would crash randomly. YMMV.

I am on my way to becoming MS-free, except on my development machine. Gotta have an ASP-enabled web server for work. And I don't want to spend $500 on Chilli!ASP. Windows XP works fine for the one site I have to host locally. And of course, must play games.

Personally, I run Linux in a VMWare session(for C++ development) and that is pretty much the extent of it. Simply don't understand why to switch, XP is just as stable(maybe the linux kernel is more stable but desktops that compare to XP are even more buggy, damn you GNOME). I must admit, linux does have the best compilers though, for standard C++ and for running perl scripts and stuff. I just dont think it's that useful for daily desktop use. Office is very nice(track changes=love).

Simply don't understand why to switch

1. Microsoft is Satan's handmaiden. Their business practices are world-renowned for their even-handedness and above-board operation. Not.

2. Microsoft software costs money. Linux is free.

3. Let's see you fix a bug in the Windows XP code. Or add a feature.
