I was playing around with the LiveCD earlier. Quite nice actually, I'll probably get around to installing it sometime this month. One thing I really liked about the new version is it includes the ath5k FOSS driver. My Atheros wireless card was detected perfectly and ready to go by default. No more binary HAL, no more configure/compile to get wireless going.

Damn I should've commented on this sooner.

I am back in love with OpenSUSE and have switched from Ubuntu again. The only problem I experienced was that in order to get flash working in 64 bit Firefox along with every other application required me to install the nspluginwrapper package (if you install flash-player from the non-oss repo then it automatically installs 32 bit pulseaudio libraries and libflashsupport, but it doesn't get nswrapperplugin which you need to run 32 bit plugins in 64 bit firefox). So that was easy as pie.

Everything else is flawless. Installing software in yast is now painless and doesn't take 10 years. In fact, I find zypper much faster than apt-get now which surprises me. Actually, I'd be willing to bet that OpenSUSE has a quicker boot time as well. Everything is just snappy and quick.

However, I'm just playing with the Gnome side of things. I have yet to experiment with KDE 4 (can't wait!). However, if the Gnome side of things is any indication, it should be a smooth experience. If you guys are in an adventurous mood then give it a go! I am in love!

Strange issue, copied from the post I made over at OpenSuse.org
http://forums.opensuse.org/app...ation.html#post1821018
Hello,

I decided to try OpenSuse 11 today and I have encountered a strange issue on two separate machines. I am using the gnome live cd 32-bit for OpenSuse 11 to install the operating system. I am using the updates, oss, and non-oss official opensuse 11 repositories.

The (possible) problem seems to be that every application automatically selects the following libraries to be installed with it despite them not being listed as dependencies. I have tried to install several programs separately, but they are all automatically marked for install when I select to install said application. Here are the packages that automatically get selected for install with each program:

(for example, these are automatically selected when I try to install the adobe flash plugin)
Alsa plugins
gcc-gij
gcc43-gij
java-1_5_0
libgcj43
libgcj43-jar
openoffice templates (the rest of the name cut off)
openoffice presentation (the rest of the name cut off)
openoffice thesaurus
yast fingerprint reader

I thought that these were simply updates, but doing a java -version reveals that Java is not even installed and neither is gcc and they do not appear under the upgrade tab in YAST's software manager.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, I am an opensuse newbie.

Thanks!

Hmm, I haven't had this problem. Maybe yast is tagging them as updates? Try installing flash through zypper (zypper in flash-player when you're logged in as root).

Yeah it would seem that OpenSuse has done a good job on this release.
Alot of nice features and faster package management.

There is a slight problem with the latest kernel2.6.25.5-1.1-pae and wireless
The Madwifi rpm's are out of date and/or incompatible with the latest kernel.
But hopefully that will get fixed in the next couple of days.

Linux keeps improving leaps and bounds. No matter what distro you use.

Madwifi maintains a repository for OpenSUSE madwifi releases. In fact, try the opensuse 11 ymp in that link.

And also, did the new ath5k driver not work for you?

One of these days I'll have to upgrade my 10.3 box. I had a bad experience going from 10.2 to 10.3, but thankfully they've improved that system. I just don't have time to risk any issues at the moment. I can't wait though!

I did a clean i4.3 gig DVD instal nstall. Looks good except I can't get on the internet. My router sees the mac address of the Linksys NC100 network everywhere card. No name or IP though. Suse 11's network setting identifies the card. All checkmarks. Can't get on the internet though. 10.2 live CD gone on the net fine.

any ideas?

Log in as root and paste the output of ifconfig.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to get the router to see the NIC and versa. Had to manually set it up.

I'm basically a very noobie on Linux.

I've had several crashes already. One opening the screensaver program in control center which resulted in an immediate reboot but I seem to have that under control.

Managed to find by Monitor and video adapter and with the right settings the display is stunning.

Right now I'm trying to get a Linksys WUSB54GS v 2.1 USB network adapter to work. It seems drivers for linux aren't available (for a lot of wifi adapters) ) so I was trying to use a program called ndiswrapper to use the windows drivers. I managed to install ndiswrapper from the distro DVD via Package Selection and it shows as installed. Problem is I dunno where I installed it to. I don't see it under applications browser.
Any ideas on a wireless USB or? network adapter?

Sorry I'm a novice on this.

On my laptop, installing ubuntu works perfect, including compiz and everything.
I installed suse 11, the eye candy wouldn't turn on. after fiddling with it for 5 minutes I took it off. I am not going to fiddle with a distro that will not work right out of the box when there are numerous others that do.

FYI Suse is the first distro I ever used years ago and is what first got me interested in linux and it still holds a special place in my heart.

@Alienwho

Do you have an ATI graphics card in it? My Desktop has issues with OpenSuse (ATI x1950 AGP), but my laptop does not (nVidia 7900GS).

Anyone know if web browser scrolling is fast with desktop effects enabled with modern (PCI-E) Radeons?

Absolutely loved Opensuse 10.3 (it was so good, it made me move away from Fedora, which I had been using since FC4)..... Opensuse 11, not so much. Which was hugely disappointing, I'm a die-hard KDE user and Opensuse's implementation of KDE 4 is the best I've seen.

Had issues with audio, almost felt like pulse audio was broken? It wouldn't let me change my volume!
Issues with my trackpad, and the auto updating software kept crashing.

For the time being I've gone to Fedora 9, I'll try reinstalling Opensuse 11 in a few months......

If you have internet connection problems with openSuSE, try disabling IPV6, it solves alot of issues. It is not fully implemented and shouldn't be enabled by default.
