Let's hear from those who have used it.

I think its awesome. It is quickly replacing IE for me.

I like it - especially now that it is free.

Can anyone let me know how to copy my favorites (bookmarks) from IE5.5 into Opera? (Or from Netscape 4.76?)

I was all ready to start using it, then I went to Pricewatch and the site doesn not work at all. Both Netscape and IE run this page flawlessly, Opera blows it big time.

[edit]

I founf that if I told Opera to identify itself as Mozilla 5.0 instead of IE5, that pricewatch now functions just fine...

It's a nice browser, it takes some tweaking (obviously), but it will be ahead of IE for ever for me....

I'm running it right now. MUCH better than 4.02 was. Pricewatch loads flawlessly on mine...

I'm running it now too! I'm still in the tweaking stage, but I can say that it is going to replace IE for sure!

I've tried Opera before and did not like it. Pages looked ugly compared to IE. I don't like Netscape for the way it feels, but on the most part pages look the same in it. I use IE 5.

I may give Opera another shot some time in the future.

Isnt Opera 5 ad supported. I believe that is the only way to get it for free. I dont need anymore ad supported software I've got enough advertising I dont look at now.

Cretin,

There's definitely a difference between the way pages looked in Opera 4.02 and Opera 5. I used to feel the same way; Opera 5 is nicer, smaller, and faster.

I'm using Opera right now. For the Pricewatch site, I told it to identify itself as "Opera" instead of the default IE5.5. Everything works fine and faster. There is one ad in the upper section of the toolbar that is unobtrusive (My callwave Internet anawering machine ad sits right over top of it). Finally, anyone have a suggestion about importing bookmarks/favorites into Opera?

One more vote for Opera. (Ok, I already voted; so what).

I've got it downloaded...just need to install it.

apoppin,

You might check out Powermarks, which supports all 3 popular browsers: http://www.kaylon.com/power.html. If this utility doesn't strike your fancy enough for you to convert all your bookmarks to it, it still may offer an export feature. Only kick is that the Opera support seems to be at V4.2...not 5.0 yet.

Thanks JellyBaby, but 25 bucks for a bookmark organizing program? Ouch!

I was hoping there was a way to use IE5 to export favorites much as it can export to Netscape. I guess they aren't easily interchangable.

The latest Opera is 5.0; I am not sure if Powermark supports it anyway.

Worst comes to worst, I can just make new bookmarks for my (daily) REALLY favorites.

jacobnero,

yes, the free version of opera has ads. but they are _really_ out of the way.

i actually love ad supported software as long as they don't try to install that spyware stuff behind my back. i hope the opera guys make a fortune.

typing this from opera:

it seems pretty good, but I agree, pages doesn't look as good as if it was from IE. and the new layout will take some getting used to.

for people who are veteran users of opera, how stable is v5 compared to ie 5.5?

I've been using Opera for around 2 years now, and it's always been much more stable than any version of IE.

I do have a few gripes, I cant hit the space bar to scroll down the page, I wish you could cutomize the toolsbars being shown, I find the one with "load, document, preview" to be a useless screen hog. The ad I can live with, although I'd be pay 20-30 to get rid of it I think. It would also be nice if the browser windows would create a new instance like IE or netscape will....I like to alt-tab between windows...otherwise I'm liking it though. Netscape mail is still my cilent of choice.

when I was typing that some pages in opera was ugly, I was talking about how opera formatted this thread: the size of the little box where your icons and handle are varied greatly from person to person. and now, the difference is only a millimeter or two. not sure why, but I'm beginning to like it.

also, I'm experiencing the same problem where opera tends to load anandtech pages from cache - really annoying. how can i fix this?

Hey Soybomb,

You know you can switch between Opera's windows by CTRL + Tab. Opera has way more keyboard shortcuts than all the other web browsers. Just play around with some of them (Help --> Keyboard) and you will come to love it. My favorite is "Hotlist fast Access" you just type in a very short "nickname" and boom the browser takes you to the site. Another thing poeple may not have noticed is that you can setup personalized button (there are many downloadable ones) it's almost like a 'skin'.

File -> Preferences -> History and Cache -> Check Modified Documents -> Always (or insert your own setting here, if you prefer).
