Opera 9.5

I recently downloaded and installed the latest version of Opera, 9.5. Visually, the browser looks great. Pages load up quickly and the "Speed Dial" element is pretty slick. One thing I'm having a difficult time getting used to though is how small the forward and back buttons are. I use Firefox primarily and I have been using FF3 (a very good browser I must say) and now I'm used to the oversized back button.

Does anyone else find this to be a minor annoyance?

You can change the Icon size in the options menu.
It is not too bad a browser, but I for the life of me
can't figure out how to block ads.

right click on a page (not on the ad itself) -> block content

One question I have is, how do I change the background image for the SpeedDial page? I've seem some neat user created skins for 9.5 but I would rather use the default except with a nicer background.

Anyone here know how to go about doing this?

I just started using Opera Mail as a replacement for Thunderbird, because Thunderbird really sucks. After a few years of using it, I'm done. Opera Mail seems pretty slick. It detected all my old mailing list e-mails automatically, it automatically enters the right port numbers for Gmail when you create an account, and it just seems really intelligent Let's hope it maintains the standard it has set in my mind.

Luda ,,, I tried that .. It is next to impossible to block all that you want to block.
Go to sysopt.com and try & get rid of all the ads along the right side of the screen.
It seems like every single line is it's own. Now with firefox, I get rid of them very easy.
And I have seen Fanboys ad block list, but I have no idea how to use it. It is not a
plug in, as Opera does not use plugins and there are no directions as to how to set
it up.

i don't know what you did wrong but (i'm using the latest weekly build opera 9.51) i can get get rid of all the ads on that site without a problem.

whatever the case this should help you set up the content blocker.

Use mouse gestures, it makes the forward and back buttons on the browser pretty much obselete.

I kept getting this password prompt for my Gmail account, over and over and over again. I've been putting up with it for too long.

So, Opera didn't work out for me either. It has a whole bunch of quirks to itself, so now I'm using Windows Mail, which seems to be just fine. <3 Microsoft

Ya know that's never happened to me, even with my Gmail account. recently though Tbird forgot my mother's password, and the computer I setup for work forgot it also. These have both been 1 time occurrences, but I found it strange.

Yeah, Opera's block content feature blows compared to Adblock but it works alright for banner ads.

Once you block something, you can usually just enter the URL in manually for other things you want to block.

Have Password Manager remember your password. The option to have it do so is right under the area where you input your password when prompted. It has never failed me.

is it possible to make folders on the links bar? I haven't figured that out yet - otherwise, love it - the built-in torrent downloader is a nice feature too.

I really like it, I'm using firefox 3 too but the more I use it the more I seem to like it, I really wish there was an integrated spell check like ff though. I know you can install it separately.

Aren't widgets technically plug-ins?

Perhaps that is what opera calls them. But they still to make one that works
like the one (ad block) in Firefox does.

While it is a good browser, it still can't match up to FF3 + awesomebar + excellent plugins.

I took a look at Opera 9.5 for a few days. It was the most crashtastic version I have tried so far. I want to like Opera, but every time I try it the browser seems to fall short of my expectations. The crashing was probably a result of Adobe Flash.

Yes, I have it setup like this, although I did it years ago.

I have two main quirks with this new version. First is my transfer history keep disppearing. The last thing I have downloaded is the 9.50 install, and I've downloaded tons of mp3's since then. I mean, it works in the same session, but when you close and come back the transfers are gone. Really annoying when you want to go back and listen to the songs from the blogs.

Sometimes when I visit a site, nothing happens - it just sits there at 0/xxx documents or whatever. Really weird and random.

Opera has it's own version of the awesomebar that actually works even better. Technically, Opera's version was in development even before Firefox's.

although it isn't like the spell check in MS word, Opera does have a spell check. it uses the open source aspell spell checker. i'll adimt though that the disadvantage is that you have to manually tell it to check.

I did these steps to speed up my opera 9.51

Go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced tab> Browsing
For Loading choose Redraw Instantly
For Page Icons Show no icons

Still under Advacned Tab go to Network:
Max Connections to Server make it 16
Max Total Connections 64

Then type in your browser (address bar)
opera:config

then scroll down to performance:
UNCHECK Reduce Max Persistent HTTP Connections
THEN click Save

Restart broswer and everything would laod up super fast now!!!
