Check out
Linuxprinting.org
That will give you a comprehesive list of printer drivers.
Both Epson and HP are generally well supported.
Stay away from Lexmarks or Canons if your a linux user. They generally have very poor linux support.
The BEST printing system for Linux is the CUPS printing system.
It stands for the Common Unix Printing System
It's used in most linux distros and is used in OS X 10.2 and later. It uses what is called the Internet Printing Protocol, and with some mods to the config file to allow incomming connections from your lan you can print from windows machines to you linux machine without having to set up stuff like SAMBA to allow the normal file and print sharing stuff that windows uses. Windows supports IPP.
Other then that the traditional way to print is by using the lpr stuff which was originally designed for those old line printers and realy sucks.
