Well, I thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss. So, what OS do you run on your main PC? Any version of the listed operating systems applies.

OpenBSD, Mac OS X, Win2k3, Solaris, or Linux depending on which is the main one today.

I'm a gamer so I have to go with windows XP. Haven't had any real issues with it yet, more stable than any other version of windows I have used. Only windows I never used was ME.

What if I have 2 main PC's that i spend equal time on?

- One runs win2k, gaming, playing media, photoshop ...
- One runs Linux, I use it for IRC (and ALWAYS have bitchx up and running when I am by my computer desk), GIMP, coding/scripting, instant messaging, playing with DBs, as well as all my server and network stuff ...

I use both for surfing the web, OpenOffice, and general usage type things (email, calculator, etc)

when it comes to the hardware ... my windows 2k box is my "baby"
when it comes to the software ... my linux box is my "baby"

I will choose linux as it's the OS i like better, and lot's of the things I do on 2K depend on my Linux box (since it's my NAT box, as well as my samba share server)

Mac OS X on my laptop that I use the most, and Windows Server 2003 on my desktop that I use occasionally.
The other computers in my house are running Windows XP. I voted OS X because I use it the most out of any of them.

Depends.

Windows 2000 has the stability and performance of XP without the extra crap.

However, XP has pretty stuff and more support for multimedia.

I prefer 2000, more stable than XP from my experience. Less stuff to turn off, less stuff that can go wrong.

In my experience 2000 was much more unstable than XP. I've never gotten a BSOD on XP, but I've had instability on 2k to 2k AS... XP is much more stable.

I voted the other be cause im a gamer and i have xp pro; I'm a little tired of the "explorer" GUI and im re programming something that I like. Maybe when longhorn is released i might find it a lot more pleasureable. For programming, I got a Linux setup running within XP, I dont want 2 pcs or to constantly restart a dual booting system. hey, maybe i'll never be happy until i can lock myself in, completely loose touch with reality and re-write an OS to my likeing----

Box 1: Main workstation, it's for web development, testing.

Windows 98 I, for website testing. IE 4
Windows 2000 sp 4. What do people do to destablize this one, it's been my main os since 2000, haven't found a consistent way except bad modem drivers. IE 5.5 [don't like IE 6, it's very buggy]
Windows 2k fat32 install, no service pack, for IE 5.
Windows XP sp 2, only for testing, hated it since I installed it, still do. IE 6
Linux, currently I think Yoper or SUSE, but don't use it.

Box 2:
Yoper 2, SUSE 9.1, soon will try ubunto.
