Well in HL2 even if the 6800 series is slower.

Well in HL2 even if the 6800 series is slower. I dont expect it to be unplayable. Even in its infancy at shadey days the 5900 was pulling around 40 fps. The 6800 should easily get near 55-60 if not more depending on how much optimizations they get in the game engine.

I'm sure the 6800GT will do fine in HL2, as I don't expect HL2 to be as punishing as D3.
As for the noise, GamePC just reviewed a MSI 6800 with an impressive HSF (much cooler and much quieter than the stock HSF). If you can wait, I'd do so for an MSI 6800GT, though it'll probably be more expensive than other GT's (seeing as their 6800 is apparently $350). Still, the lower noise may be worth the wait and the higher price, unless you're willing to forego the warranty and slap on a VGA Silencer yourself.

Just picked up a Leadtek a400 6800gt and I must say it is a nice card, fast and smooth.
I wanted it for Doom 3 so I had to wait. I replaced it from a 9800 pro which couldn't cut the mustard anymore.
Either card will do you fine.
Half Life 2 will probably do better on the ATI card.
