GT. Just note that the HSF may not be the quietest (according to TechReport's 6800 roundup), so you may want to check with BFG to see if adding an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer will void your warranty.

I know the answer will be yes, but it can't hurt to ask.

Just picked up a Leadtek a400 6800gt and I must say it is a nice card, fast and smooth.
I wanted it for Doom 3 so I had to wait. I replaced it from a 9800 pro which couldn't cut the mustard anymore.
Either card will do you fine.
Half Life 2 will probably do better on the ATI card.

6800GT. However, I am a little worried that I jumped the gun too soon, I hope the 6800GT can keep up with the game that will reside on our hard drives far longer than Doom 3 - Half Life 2

Use a search button. Plenty of polls with exact same question.

Well in HL2 even if the 6800 series is slower. I dont expect it to be unplayable. Even in its infancy at shadey days the 5900 was pulling around 40 fps. The 6800 should easily get near 55-60 if not more depending on how much optimizations they get in the game engine.

Slower or not, nVIDIA cards will still be able to play it. Just as ATi cards can play Doom 3.

I voted nVIDIA. IMHO, nVIDIA drivers seem to be a more clean, less obtrusive install than ATi drivers. Again, that's just an opinion, so please don't flame me. The technology backing the 6800 series is incredible in its own right, too. I see the longevity of a more flexible card being a better buy; because of the 6800 core.

I'm sure the 6800GT will do fine in HL2, as I don't expect HL2 to be as punishing as D3.

As for the noise, GamePC just reviewed a MSI 6800 with an impressive HSF (much cooler and much quieter than the stock HSF). If you can wait, I'd do so for an MSI 6800GT, though it'll probably be more expensive than other GT's (seeing as their 6800 is apparently $350). Still, the lower noise may be worth the wait and the higher price, unless you're willing to forego the warranty and slap on a VGA Silencer yourself.

agreed, but it's not like D3 is unplayable on the PRO either....

i'd give the edge to the GT as it's a bit better overall value IMO, but frankly I don't see how you could be unhappy with either card. imo ati made a mistake by cutting 4 pipes...

I kinda agree with that, but with the latest screen shots i have seen, it doesn't look to HARDWARE intense..

I have confidence i can run 1600x1200 MAX.

And if i can do that, i don't care who does better.
