<< You have to enable 64tap anisotropic filtering to get the same visual quality though, and then your down to being only marginally above R8500 speeds. Plus you could always enable anisotropic filtering on the R8500 with a pretty minimal performance hit to put it back up above the GF3. >>

I thought enabling Anisotropic filtering on Radeon cards automically disables Trilinear Filtering.

I would think so because radeon cards (all of them not just the 8500) still can't run anisotropic filtering...along with trilinear filtering at the same time...this blows....anyone know if this can be fixed by a driver release?

I had my heart set on a Radeon 8500 b/c of the latest AT article. I was using a V5, so I really wanted something with comparable AA. nVidia's AA still blows IMO, but I had to jump in during the BB sale. I placed an order in early Nov.

That being said, I'm extremely happy and impressed with my VisTek GF3 Ti200. I got it on the BB deal however for $99; for $200, I'm not so sure. Its a good deal online as most Ti200's can be had for around $170 shipped, but at $200+, I'd go with a Radeon 8500 still. I ended up cancelling my Radeon 8500 from Dell I had ordered for @$210, but a Radeon may be in my future if the price drops a bit on the retail.

I just got my 8500 2 weeks ago in my new system.
I am running a xp1700 and windows xp.
I haven't seen a single problem in any game or app I have run yet.
Maybe I am just lucky but this thing is rock solid.
Stuff I have ran
DaibloII
Links 2001
Falcon 4.0
Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Ghost recon
Giants
The Sims
I have been running the beta drivers btw and playing with power strip. I bought an OEM and have been running it at 274,274 with no problems.
once I get above that I start to see a few artifcts.
Also mine was a clean instal on a new machine so maybe that bears in mind.
But I can't see going wrong by picking the Radeon!

I got my 8500 about a month ago.
Have problems with picture quality w/ my TV wonder.
Tribes 2 drops to about 3 SPF (yes, sec per frame, runs like a freaking slide show) in win xp, half life also has some jumpy screens at high res.
Running a dual boot now so I can play games.
Is awesome under win 98
Color saturation is fantastic(as compared to my Geoforce2 GTS pro)
DVD palyback is great.
ATI's support sucks ( I miss having a massive support page like 'geoforcefaq.com")
Have yet to find what the optimal bios setting are.
Okay, all that being said, I'm very satisfied with the card. I purchased knowing full well I was buying 'potential'.
I'm more disillusioned with WIN XP then the Radeon 8500 ( other hardware/software incompatibilities).
I went into Best Buy to get the Ti200, but when I compared the that to the ti500 and the Radeon, there was something ti200 didn't list as being supported that the other 2 did( Advanced T&L,DX 8.1? can't quite remeber)

Tough decision for me.
I live over in Australia so the ATi radeon 8500 is about $100 more expensive then the Ti200 ($550-600 compared to $475 for the Ti200). Yes I know those prices seem shocking to you guys, but it all the same in the end.
Either way it is proving difficult to get either card over the xmas period, esp. the hercules Ti200.
I like the ATi's features and 2D quality (i do some graphics work and watch DVD's), although the driver issues and potential XP problems are causing me to look to the Ti200. The XP success stories are breathing some light on the matter though....it would be nice to hear from some more people who own a radeon 8500.

Used to be so easy to pick a video card before when the decision was either nvidia or nvidia, although the choice is always nice of course.

The 8500 is better compared to the GF3 and Ti500, not the Ti200.

i think this kind of thread is getting old--it's been asked for a zillionth times already.
I like both personally--they have their advantages and disadvantages compared to each other.

No kidding Anime. It all comes down to this: Neither card is completely better than the other. If you're big on multimedia stuff and have the cash, go for a Radeon seeing as how it has many more "funky" features, and more tv, etc. features. GeForce3 is cheaper and is just as good for gaming. In OpenGL GeForce3 outperforms Radeon, and GF3 is also better at higher resolutions. The radeon sucks running on xp with some of the drivers, especially at higher res. However, this will be corrected soon enough if not already in which case I'm making an ass out of myself. But all benchmarking done on either card is too close to say which is better than the other. Get the Radeon if you want the extra features, otherwise just go with GeForce and save some money.
