guy is asking $1800, truck has 'flat paint' (maybe rattle-canned?) and needs tires badly.

Has 105k, and the 2.4cyl 4 cylinder with a 5 speed. (this is fine power-wise, as I'm not towing anything...) but how reliable are these motors?.. I think these are the 'dual spark plug' ones

EDIT:

going to look at it tonight. Also found out that the front sits too high, not sure of the details, but someone about he cut the springs, then it was too low, so he replaced them and they're too high? The guy is 40-45 I think, so it's not like a 'pimp-mobile' or wtfever those mini truck things are called

In my experience, Ford Rangers are extremely reliable and sturdy. My father had 2, the first went over 423,000 miles; the second went over 350,000. My friend has one now with 200,000 and it's still going strong. I don't care what anyone says, Rangers are good trucks.

My father had a 1995 and 1996 Ford Ranger for work trucks back in the mid-90s.

They were both solid trucks for light-weight trucking. I liked the cab overall and thought the interior was of better quality than trucks in that class. Depending on the package, the trim might be pretty nice--but they do skimp on the bottom end.

Both trucks were 5 speeds and had transmission issues around 50-60k miles and had to be rebuilt pretty early on. This was basically a mechanical defect in those years from what the dealer mechanic said.... So as long as the tranny seems stable, it'll probably hold up. I've known these trucks to hit 200-250k miles, but they don't look like much when they get there.

My dad has the same truck, except it's a 94 and has over 260,000 miles on it. Same anemic 2.4 liter 4 banger with a stick shift. Most of the miles were highway for about 9 years, but since then it's just been around town driving. My dad is meticulous about changing the oil every 5000 miles and has done other standard maintenance on it. The only thing that was really wrong with it was something having to do with the driveshaft and that happened at 50K miles. Been running find ever since. The engine, while grossly underpowered (has trouble getting up small hills at highway speeds unloaded), seem to be reliable if it was taken care of.

I think $1800 is a bit much, brand new I think they went for around $10-12K and this truck is over 10 years old. Granted it has low miles, but I'd still try to talk him down to at least $1500. You'll need to get new tires and probably other things too so you can try to use that as leaverage.

BTW....my suggestion is to buy for that price....but test drive it and listen carefully as you shift through all of the gears. After you verify that it sounds good and shifts smoothly, be sure to replace the transmission filter and fluid as soon as you get it.

Sorry...meant to add, the 1995 truck my father had was the V6. I do recall that in the 1996, he was going up a mountain once and trying to pass a truck, he actually had trouble getting enough torque to pass going up the steep grade and ended up floating the lifters... On the positive side, the 4 banger will give you better gas milage and there is an extremely large base of ranger drivers out there that use them as commuters.

You wouldn't try to negotiate? Remind me to sell you all my old vehicles

The engine is older than dirt & has been pretty refined over the years, it's been put in everything from Snow Cats to Rangers...

Agree on the tranny check, they were a bit of a PITA.

Offer him $1500 cash & see if he bites.

My dad's got one. It has and I'm sure always has had trouble getting up steep hills.

With the paint and tires that are necessary I would recomend offering him $1200 and see what he says. He might have had this truck on the market for 2 months and could realllly be wanting to get rid of it.

<--- is waiting on a possible buyer to call him back on his used car

Make sure the title has no Flood damage notations (ask to see the most recent one).

ermm how did it get a 2.4l in it and where did it come from? rangers over the years have come in 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0 and 4.0 varieties, remember that when you ask people about reliability, odds are they had a different engine. the only 4 banger in 95 from the factory was a 2.3l possibly with a turbo, not sure on that.
the proper forum to ask about this would be http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/

I have a 1992 V-6 4 liter 5 speed 4wd Ranger with 148k miles on it. I bought it with 107k miles on it and has been exceptionally reliable since.

I've got a '95 ranger with 140K miles on it. Haven't put more than 3000 miles in the last 3 years. I usually use it for dump runs. But it cranks right up. Its never caused me any headaches. BUt with any used car it just depends on how its been treated.

i used to have a mid-90s mazda b2300 and it was very reliable. unfortunately it was totaled around 100k.

afaik there is really no difference between it and a ford ranger.

Article about an article. Not the same model year though.

I'm really not too worried about it rolling over - plus I believe it was the explorer that was really dangerous- which is built off of a ranger platform but has the added weight of having the rear covered.
