I'm building my system from scratch. I've seen several reviews and built my system from those reviews. My budget is pretty high since I plan on keeping this system for a while so here goes.

Processor: Athlon 64 fx-53 (socket 939)
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - SOCKET 939
Memory DDR2: Corsair Valueselect Kit 240-Pin 1 GB (2x512MB) DDR2 PC2-4200
Video Card: XFX NVIDIA 256MB GeForce 6800 GT, GDDR3
Hard-Drive: Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA
CD/DVD: Pioneer Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model DVR-108
Case: Coolermaster Praetorian (PAC-T01-E1) Silver
Power Supply: Antec True480Blue 480W
Audio: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (7.1) retail
Heat Sink/fan: Thermalright SLK-948U w/ Vantec "Stealth" 92mm Smart Case Model "SF9225L"

I appreciate all comments/suggestions.

Thanks,

Shot

Yes, that is a nice system.

Do yourself a favor, and get a motherboard from another manufacturer.

Just do a search of the forums (search feature), and read the problems others have posted here for yourself.

I know MSI offers a lot of features for the money, but I would go a different route.

Here

and

Here

BTW, I don't buy anymore MSI products, but a coworker wanted me to build his new machine. Against my advice, he bought a Neo 965PE motherboard. I took it out of the box, and installed it. Worked for a few days, and the IDE connectors stopped working. Luckily, he bought it from a local computer place, and he exchanged it for the recommended Gigabyte 8IPE1000P-G that worked like a charm. Price difference was $25.00 for this much better board.

One more thought....

I'd go with the BFG FX6800 256 GT OC.....because it outperforms the other GT models (of course, its overclocked) and has a true lifetime warranty. I'll be buying one myself in the coming weeks.

Saying "dont get the MSI" does not help.

"Dont get the MSI because of this.. and, instead, get the ...." would be better.

Other boards in the same run:
GIGABYTE "GA-K8NSNXP-939" nForce3 Ultra Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 939 CPU
ABIT "AV8" K8T800 Pro Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 939 CPU
ASUS "A8V Deluxe" VIA K8T800 Pro Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU

Anandtech review suggests the MSI is the best route followed by GIGABYTE and AV8.

you might think about getting a ATI x800Pro VIVO and then flashing the cards bios to an x800xt. I did and now I get a 12704 on 3Dmark 03. You can usually get the card for about $400 its worth the $$$ difference IMHO.

They test how fast it is and its stability for a few days. The MSI boards are fast, but seem to have problems over the long run. I think I would buy a PC Chips motherboard over an MSI anymore.

Anandtech reviewed an MSI board several years ago, and then built some of their servers around it. They all started dying and having major problems after a few months.

So, I will stick by my original post of suggesting something other than MSI. Of course Gigabyte and Asus have a very good history of quality. However, he can search and read user reviews for himself.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Yeah I'm planning on having it for a long time so I dont want to have problems a few months down the line. Also I'd like your input on the memory.

ultra expensive memory is overated in my opinion. So what if it is 5% faster and cost 100% more.

Go with this ram

That is good ram and is at $142.00 for 1 Gig (512 X 2 for dual channel)

I've got the same ram in my system and it has been fantastic. Highly recommended for the price.

I've also got the XFX card that you are looking out and just wanted to warn you that it is pretty noisy. I'm not sure if I just got a noisy card, but it bothers me so much that I am actually going to be replacing the stock cooling solution with a Nv Silencer 5. Besides the fan noise, the card has been great.

Your problem is you have no real experience. Yes the Msi is good out of the box but how well will it hold up over time? My experience with Msi boards is that they are prone to an unusually hi rate of failures usually just after the warranty ends. I question Msi's long term durability that is why i would look at alternatives. Sorry but i have built a lot of PCs in the last several years and I will not use Msi boards anymore if there is a suitable alternative.
