My son's computer is getting old. He likes to download music and surf web but he doesn't game (has PS3)

I could take dvd drive from old computer and. I have an unopened XP disc I could use. He has xp now. I'd probably pickup a vid card. Any recommedations for that (< $100)

What do people think of this? can't find expiration date of offer.

The power supply included in that combo isn't very good, otherwise, the list of components is decent enough. If you're willing to buy a better quality power supply, such as this one:

He'll have a good, solid system. Do NOT cheap out on the power supply. They're unreliable and go "Poof" all too often...and when they do, they can take out some of your other hardware.

This is a high quality PSU for a cheap price and it is better than the Antec Earthwatt (Green) series. I have 1 in my new system and it works great. Antec HCG-400 400W

For basic web surfing use, an i3 is more than adequate.
$210 - i3-2100 + GIGABYTE GA-H67M-D2-B3

You only really need 4GB, but 8GB is relatively cheap, especially at $60.

^ Although the deals on 8GB kits are good, building around OP's choice of WinXP (32bit) as the OS makes 4GB more than enough. That's not to agree with OP's choice of OS though: a new system deserves a 64bit OS with up-to-date driver support.

Its a waste of your money. The i5 is a gaming processor, the power supply can only handle the most marginal of gaming graphics cards, and supposedly he doesn't even want to game! Add in the cost of a graphics card and you aren't saving any money.

Forget your old $20.oo optical drive and focus on getting an i3 or athlon system. For that kind of money you could also get a decent netbook or laptop if that's what he prefers. fffblackmage's suggestion is good if you want something really durable with parts that can used in a future build or upgraded.

:thumbsup: The i5 2400 in that combo not worth sacrificing the whole build to a HEC power supply.
