I'm going to build a system for my good friend, and this is what I've compiled so far. Let me know what you think of it, and offer any suggestions you may have for changes/additions. Thanks!

-All parts (except for memory) will be purchased from Newegg. I'm pretty firm on this, but LMK if you know of a better place. Time is an issue, so I would like to have everything come in one package if at all possible.

Here's the list (prices current as of writing):

CASE & PSU - ANTEC SX1030B w/ 300 watt PSU $88
Motherboard - ABIT KR7A-133RAID $130
Processor - AMD Athlon XP 1600+ $91
RAM - Crucial 256MB ECC Registered $111.59
Video Card - Leadtek GeForce 3 Ti200 $130 ($7 discount w/ Lite-on)
Hard Drive - Western Digital 80GB $115
Cooler - Vantec CCK 6027D $18
Burner - Lite-On 32x $75
DVD - Pioneer 106S $49
Sound Card - Creative Audigy OEM $61
NIC - D-Link 10/100 $9
Floppy - Sony $9
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total system cost: $886.59

Why I chose:

Case: Good solid case, comes with PSU. Good price

Mobo: Wanted a mobo w/ 6 PCI for lots of expansion later down the road, ATA133 + RAID for the same reason. Liked the good reviews and high benchies

Processor: Good value for the price

RAM: Also wanted expansion later down the road. Picked registered so all 4 slots could be filled up

Video Card: TV-Out, good price, good game performance

Hard Drive: Had good experiences w/ WD. Good price over Seagate

Cooler: Works well in my experience, and good price

Burner: Price/performance

DVD: Slot loaders are just COOL!

Sound: Didn't need fancy breakout box, good price

NIC: Cheap

Floppy: Just your average floppy

I didn't include a monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers in the mix because my friend will just pick those up himself, since they are subjective.

about the ram, why do you need to get ecc registered to fill up all the slots?

I chose ECC just for data checking, I know it's not needed to use all four slots, but I chose registered so I could fill up all four slots. The small speed difference with registered isn't worth not being able to use all four slots.
