Opinions on wireless setups...

I'm considering setting up a wireless network for 5 computers, of which two would be wireless. I need a router to share a cable modem between them all.

My question is: Would it be better to buy a Wired Router + Wireless Access Point or just to get a wireless router?

Of these options, which would be better as far as reliability and does anyone have any suggestions as to what brands to use for either? I think I'm probably going with Orinoco NICs (one USB, one pcmcia). They have a deal where I can get the NICs bundled with their RG-1100 router which I would have to plug into a wired router to give me enough connections for my other systems. The wireless router I've kinda been looking at is the SMC Barricade. A print server built in is nice, but not a necessity.

Matt,

The SMC seems to be a good one. Check out this link before buying to get a better price on it.

In terms of buying a router versus a WAP, for your need I would definitely go for a router unless you can get a better deal by buying the two separate components.

In terms of what to buy, that is a question I have been trying to get answers to over the last week. I haven't had much luck. Most of my threads have gone with few or no responses. I have found that most of the 802.11b products are mature enough now not to cause too many problems. My advice is to find the one that meets your functional requirements at the lowest price and to buy it.

Good luck.

The Wireless part of the Wireless Cable/DSL Routers seem to have more options, then the Entry level WAP, and there is less probability to make mistake in setting it up since there is no duplication of functions (like two DHCPs).

On the other hand, stand-alone WAPs allow you the flexibility of better positioning for wider coverage; some WAPs have replaceable antennae, which is a useful feature.

In general, I prefer the Wireless Router, but I have also few installations with WAPs to achieve max, coverage.

What do I need for wireless networking?

my advice - get a wired router - i love my linksys

add a wireless access point - (linksys)

the reason being that for what ever reason - you may want to upgrade your wireless access to 802.11a and you will only have to change your wireless components, not your entire router. also, you have the option of placing your wireless access point somewhere else in the house distant from your router. that may not be important to everyone, but my experience has been that the router/cable modem location isn't always the best for wireless coverage of the house. also, get a USB wireless adapter, as it allows ou optimal positioning of your antenna for good reception. internal fixed cards can't work as well (again linksys)
