Opinions Please - Anti-Noise Generation

#1: I'll believe it when it's installed in my PC and reducing noise for $80 or less.

At $80 you can get a cheap pair of noise-cancelling headphones ($50) or spend a little more for some nice BOSE ones. Just offering some alternatives for those who can't wait

where can these noise cancelling headphones be found for $50? and oh yeah, the product sounds good, but luckily my computer is extremely quiet already, but it would definately go over big.

I think Best Buy has some Aiwa or Jensen noise cancelling headphones. Not the best, but they are "noise cancelling"

I had an idea though (before you came up with this idea):

What if it were designed to be a PCI card with the noise cancelling system on that.. it would be the best option if it could be done.. that way software and drivers for it could be updated so the unit could keep increasing it's ability to cancel noise.. it could still be powered by 12 Volts but controlled through the PCI slot.. sounds a little complicated though but it's capable of mass production if it can be done.. I'm sure many OEM's would consider opting to use them which is where the real money is at..

I was under the impression that the unit being discussed was only to be given a power source -- that means the microphone, speaker, and hardware/software is standalone; no need for interaction with the PC.

Adding the interface for the PC would cost lots of money in terms of manufacturing and research. And who wants to continue to support a small product like this for drivers, software updates, and firmware updates? IMO, it all comes down to money. What would people really justify payment for? Would they spend $200+ for something that may be unsupported in the next year or so? How about more money for better support? I know I couldn't justify it.

Okay if a case is loud it maybe 40DB (guessing). Then lets say it cuts out 'only' 50% of the sound. Then it would be 100 times less powerful. Because the human ear hears something to be half/twice as powerful at every 10Db change. (EG from 40 to 30 would be 10 times less powerfull.) Thats pretty good.

From what I read at Ars, this will not work well. If you're not using the anti-noise on the right frequencys then it will just generate noise. Also, there are many different frequencys of sound coming from a PC. Different fans have different sounds, as do hard drives.

I highly doubt this will work.

If it is a true anti-noise generator then the point about frequency is moot. As it will be reading frequency and then generating an exact copy directed back at the source of noise. The two waves will cancel. But is it going to have multiple mics and multiple speakers to neutralize the sounds coming from different areas of the case or only the sounds directly behind the drive bay it will be mounted in. Granted this will trim a large portion of sound, but not all.

Nope. The device (if it exists and works as predicted in this thread) doesnt predict anything, it listens to the sounds inside the machine (just like your ears) and then returns the same signal only reversed back into the case cancelling out the sounds it "heard".

Works fine when making records so I cant see why it shouldnt work.
