Unless you've already got the cables, I suggest checking the deal at Surf Audio, a well respected vendor I found through AVS Forums who sell it for $199 Fedex shipping included along with "Added Bonus! - includes both a 5' DVI cable and a 6' DVI-to-HDMI cable!:

They also flash the system to the latest firmware before shipping.

Hey that's a darn good substitue deal, thx for the info.

I also glow with pride when someone nicknamed Holycrap posts in one of my deal threads

from what I can tell it does pretty good at eliminating macroblocking.
VERY long thread at AVS here
cliff notes:
oppo is one of the better affordable upconverting dvd players but will NOT up-convert if using component out, you must use DVI to up-convert

avs is a place where you'll hear professional and amateur opinions alike. Sometimes you need to filter out the fanboy cheerleading, but it's hard to beat some of the in-depth testing found at AVS.

I'm nearly sure the Oppo would hand that toshiba it's rear on a platter, but reserach beforehand because you may not want/need all the features a $200 Oppo has to offer.

When I was researching this player and my own Panasonic S77, both have macroblocking issues due to their faroudja scalers/de-interlacers.
They don't enhance macroblocking when used over component, but if you're going to do that, you only get 480p out of them and the S77 does a better job of component output.

Some people don't notice the macroblocking issue on their tvs and some people have been very bothered by it. So try to look around the threads at AVS and see if someone has your set to see what they have to say.

Chunkee -

The OPDV971H will pretty much play anything you throw at it. I have yet to have a disc get thrown back at me, and I have a rather substantial DVD-+R/RW disc collection. Havn't used the sony, so I do not know how that stacks up.

The Toshiba, and pretty much any DVD player with the Zoran chipset, fail horribly at motion-adaptive de-interlacing. The OPDV971H is probably the best 200 and bellow upconverting DVD player currently on the market.

what exactly is the reason why upconverting can't be done over analog component, vs. only digital dvi?

Other upconverters I've seen don't seem to have this limitation.

Most DVD players have either removed upconverting through component through hardware or software changes (Samsung 851 and LG 318 come to mind) because of HDCP and CSS requirements. HDCP can't be applied to an analog signal, and if you apply for HDCP and CSS compliance, you are technically not allowed to upconvert copy protected DVDs through the component outputs. However, neither the CSS or HDCP commitee have foreced compliance, yet.

In the OPDV971H's case, the Faroudja chipset is only connected to the DVI outboard. The component output is only connected to the MTK mainboard. So upconverting is impossible through the component outputs in this case.

I was looking at this deck for a while now - figured it'd go nice with the new nkyo HT-S780(S) I just got, and the planned new HDTV set. I had a few questions, however, that I hope somebody could help with.

Does the upconverting make it look any better? I know normal DVDs aren't created to take advantage of HD resolutions - how is this any better? Is there a big difference viewing a DVD upconverted to HD versus watching it on a normal player? What about HD to SD?

Also, do some types of movies look better than others? Like Action movies and ones with heavy CG effects look better than dramas, or movies with more static images? What about animation? I watch a lot of Anime...

Thanks for any help, guys.

I think the main benefit here is if your HDTV has a crappy scaler/deinterlacer chip.

Upconverting with this player can have some macroblocking effects, so some people think it looks better to just output 480p to their HD displays.

Yeah, some movies are of better visual quality than others. It kind of depends on movie to movie.

I LOVE the fact that the Oppo offers seamless layer change--truly unique among ANY dvd player at ANY price.

I've had $1000+ dvd machines that couldn't do this....it drove me crazy!

Now that's an intelligent and helpful answer. Thanks.

Anyone know if this will do 1:1 pixel mapping to an Infocus 4805 (854 x 480 native resolution)?

No, instead, try getting a Momitsu V880 which has custom resolutions. Search AVSForums.com for info on the Momitsu.
