Opteron 144 vs 64 3700+

Trying to make a quick, last minute descision between an Opteron 144 and a 64 3700+ (San Diego). I've read, in a few different threads, that some folks prefer the Opteron over the 64. I am curious what advantages I would have with one over the other.

The Opterons overclock better. If you don't plan on overclocking just buy whatever has a higher clock speed.

I think if you want to overclock get the opteron 144, but if you plan on not overclocking get the 3700+. Advantages of opteron is high overclockability. 3700+ runs at 2.2 i believe wont over as high but probably runs alot cooler than the opteron. But IMHO i think the your better off with a 3200+ venice mines does 2.6ghz 1.5v. Im am upgrading to dual core opterons,but if it doesnt overclock high enough, i'll get X2 3800 because they run alot cooler. Save yourself the money and get a 3200+venice rev E overclock it to 2.6-2.8 depending on your setup. If you want opteron, get a 146 instead of 144 or just go dual core. I ran both opteron and athlons and find that athlons general are equal in real life performance to opterons of the same speed. Not a huge noticeable difference. GO for whats cheaper!

I just checked becuse I didn't remember and the 3700+ is 2.2GHz while the Opteron is 1.8GHz. Both are architecturally the same and have the same amount of cache.

So if you are not overclocking the 3700+ is definitely the better choice.

Check out some reviews and see for yourself. There is no definite answer to this question. It depends largely on the task at hand.

i have a 3700 and it will do 2.8 easy i haven't really tried to go anyhigher but very solid and runs cool.

i have a 3700 and yes it is 2.2 GHZ with 1 MEG L2 cache and it is a good overclocker. i have mine at 2.5 GHZ at default voltage with no trouble at all. i have not pushed it further yet but plan on it later on.

Ok I have them BOTH.
On my system the 3700 went to 2553mhz easy no prob. When I put in the Opteron144 today I havent been able to get it to 2000.

I dont care what anyone says my 3700 kicked the c%$# out of the opty. I feel so dumb for trying to save $30.

PS the opty is about 3deg cel hotter too.

I seen people hit 2.9 on air with the san deigos, but 2.7 is a safe bet. Problem with the opteron 144-146 now is that they keep on changing the steppings. I don't know how are the steppings doing as of lately.
