both can be had for the same price, which one should i get? i am overclocking, and i hear the 146 is a better overclocker but shouldn't the 3700 be a better oc'er due to its 11x multiplier, which would allow for a lower htt causing less strain on the cpu & mobo? is 2.7 ghz realistic with either of these chips?

2.7ghz is certainly realistic. My 148 does 2.91ghz @ 1.45v. I ran prime at that speed for 8 hours. 3ghz is another story. It requires a lot more voltage.

See my sig.

If you pick up the right stepping 2.8+GHz is 'basically' garuanteed ...

Why would you upgrade from a 2.6Ghz cpu to a 2.8Ghz cpu when both are pretty much the same thing? 200Mhz doesn't seem like enough of a bump to even notice. No judgment here, just wondering.

I don't know but I think the A64 seem better for gaming so I got the 3700 myself last week, if you do make sure you get the CF one with lower voltage.

That's a strange conclusion to come to considering they're basically the same thing except the Opteron has twice as much cache.

The Opterons use exactly the same core revision (E4) as the San Diego chips.

If you want single core, and you can find good deals, always go for the Opteron 144/146

Opteron 146 FTW!

I have one at 2.8ghz on 1.45v.

much better than my 3200+ venice that was doing 2.4ghz on stock v core.

And since were seeing Quad core cpu's in 2007, I think I might just skip the dual core chips.

146 for sure.... mine does 2.8 at stock vcore, 2.9@1.45 and will go to windows at 3.0@1.45, although not prime stable. I *might* be able to get 3.0 stable, but why when I can run 2.8 at stock?

they have the same cache (146?)

but heres the thing. the 3700 had a crappiest heatsink ive seen
and since optys have the choice of getting its IHS removed and stuff and id think a better hs, go with the opty

For a good deal, go to Tankguys.com. I just did and ordered a sweet retail 146. I was about to order a plain Jane A64 venice for my kiddies puter which is starting to make funny noises, but I got an email from TG and I had to bite. I was looking in the $160-170 range and this price was just right.
