FSH42NA, hopefully you will get a CABYE 0540 I ordered two weeks apart and got the exactly the same stepping on both processors. you have a good shot at getting that stepping.

Blah Rustler, I bought my 148 Retail at the same time you did and got a 0536GPMW. They are bad compared to the 0540s. I got 2827mhz at 1.5v: nothing compared to your 2800 at stock! You've been getting lucky!

I got an OEM 148 from newegg on Nov. 4. I'm lucky enough, it's a CABNE 0528GPMW. It can SuperPI 32M stable at 3GHz @ 1.40V.

Don't know the stepping of OEM 148 from them now.

I just hope they ship it. Even though I ordered around 6 am Wednesday morning, I still haven't received a shipping notice and tracking number. Guess I got my order in just in time before the final rush started.

Mine just came in, it's a CABYE 0540 FPMW.... I've heard the FPBW's are better, but at least I didn't get the CAB2E. Those are iffy, but I guess it's all a crapshoot anyway...

edit: typo

I believe since the 148's don't sell so fast, there is a better chance of getting a better stepping (e.g. CABYE 0540) Alot of the 144's appearing are CAB2E and 146's, well, they're pretty hard to find....

The CAB2E's are pretty good but not quite as good as the 0540 that have hit 3.4-3.5 GHz with extreme cooling, 2.8-3.0 in air on stock voltage...

I would have preferred to order a 146 for $165 but the 146's are now nowhere to be found and they aren't expected to ever come back in stock. Heck, I think even Monarch ran out of stock.

zzf has them.

Crap tank just sold out of the 144 I linked LOL.

I paid a bit more, but I knew what I was getting.... er well sort of...LOL I knew it would be an 0540, the CABYE was a pleasant suprise. I installed this chip, it's doing 2.5@ 1.4v. Temps are a bit high for my liking though, 44 idle and was 55 during prime. My venice chips were a lot cooler, I'm thinking I might need to re-apply the AS. Gonna wait till next week though when my new fan and AS5 come in.

Winchesters are coolest of them all - have no idea why they stopped making them. But I remember in testing they used about 5-10W less than even venice. As far as optys - 1 and 2 MB - Seriously Cache is not worth it me thinks.. higher operating temps ( i notice this in 165 vs 4200) and more power use.. Best CPU to buy price/performance is still 3000+ 939.. especially when ewiz had them for $104 LOL.

I just replaced my Winchester with my Opteron and the 3200 Winchester was a decent overclocker. It was also in my Asus rig.

With all this opteron frenzy going on, I had a serious case of the pee-pee dance and went OEM. A day later I ordered another OEM. Got my 1st OEM yesterday and it's a:
CAB2E 0545 FP..... something. Haven't done anything with it yet, but was hoping for a CABYE or CABNE. My 2nd OEM was delivered today (home). Hopefully, when I get home I won't be double disappointed.

cab2e aint bad at all. Mine does 2.9ghz like it's nothing. I undervolt it to just a hair above 1.3v and run 2850.

Lithan and Rustler,

Thanks for the encouragement about the CAB2E's. Just wish I had time to test them out. Honey do, kiddie stuff you know. Switch to irrationality now: I want my CABYE 0540!! Wah Monarch, when are you gonna ship my chip????? It's still at "sent to warehouse". You better not run out on me:|

Something not right there. It looks to me like case airflow is your problem (or you have a horribly seated HSF). The two CABYE 0540's that I own idle at 37C with a max load of 47C in 72F ambient air (xp-90/AS5). Both at 2800 MHz @ 1.392v. I am using an Antec P180 with 4x120mm. Clean up the wiring inside to un-obstruct the pathway and get some air moving through there. I think you'll be pleasntly suprised...

It aint the case, I can assure you. I use an XP-90 with a low speed fan, I think it's a simple TIM (AS3) application issue. My case is the Chenbro Gaming Bomb II, wiring is impeccable and airflow is very good. The only outside factor that could be causing problems is the X800XT PE and it's cooler. I wish it would have come with a 2 slot cooler, that helped a ton on my 9800pro/Arctic cooling setup.

How warm is your ambient air? The last time I saw temps like yours was when using a 130nm Clawhammer 3500+ @ 2.5 GHz @ stock volts! That was one hot sumbitch. You could get an AC Silencer for your VC ~ $30. I love mine, but didn't notice a big drop in case cooling, maybe 2C at most. The GPU runs much cooler though and very quiet.

Do you have a case fan(s) installed backwards? Not to be insulting, but sometimes that happens (I can't count the times I've been backwards )

How low speed of fan? I use an XP-90 with a 92mm Panaflo HBX turning 1500 rpm idle and 2800 load. What is the top end on your fan?

I have never seen any of the five 90nm core cpu's I've owned ever idle over 40C overclocked. At 2.5 GHz, a 90nm should idle at about 35C in 75F ambient...

Yeah forgot to mention different mobos will report temps differently. This often gets overlooked when discussing...My temps relate to a DFI nF4 Ultra-D....
