if you want to cancel an order that hasnt shipped from monacrh, just reply to the email you received that said your order has been sent to the warehouse, with cancel in the subject line regarding your order, and give them a reason in the email itself. this is what they told me over the phone and it worked great.

my oem 148 should be here the middle of next week

You could get an AC Silencer for your VC ~ $30. I love mine, but didn't notice a big drop in case cooling, maybe 2C at most. The GPU runs much cooler though and very quiet.

Do you have a case fan(s) installed backwards? Not to be insulting, but sometimes that happens (I can't count the times I've been backwards )

Ambient is about 70F, I'm really leaning towards the additional heat from the vid card, even the 2 venices I had in here ran a bit warmer than normal.

About the AC silencer, I loved the one on my 9800Pro, until one day the fan stopped on me while playing a game online and fried my card... That has me a little gun shy on them right now...

The cpu fan is ~1500-1800 rpm, and about 21 cfm. Nice and quiet yes, but I ordered a high speed panaflo and a zalman fan speed controler, I want to try for 3 gig on air and I don't think the current fan is up to the task...

Good point about the case fans, I did recently remove and clean them and the filters, but I just checked and they are installed correctly. They're the stock 120 sunons, and I have them at 7v because they are WAY loud at 12v. I'll be putting them on the controller once it arrives.

My board is an MSI neo2 Plat, and come to think of it I have been experimenting with BIOS', and just flashed before I put this opty in. I wonder if that would make that much of a difference? Anyway, my fan, AS5 and controller should be here Mon or Tue, hopefully I can get this straightned out.

sodcha0s, keep us posted on a resolution on this problem at 70 ambient you should have pretty good temps, I built a system with a FX51 with the same case and the temps were no where near where yours are.

Ok, here is what I got. 148 OEM

CAB2E 0545CPBW
1358644K50202

Finally had a chance to pop it in and see what it will do.
So far it at least matches my 150. I am at 255x11 all same settings, which was at minimum what I was looking for. Better yet it idles about 6c less than the 150 at 2805.

Going to let it run a while and see if I can push it a little further.

OK this is getting stranger... Got the new fan, fan controller and AS5, installed everything making sure to thoroughly clean the HS/CPU and properly apply the AS5. Turned it on, set the fans to the approx. speed they were before, temps are the same. Crank the fans full blast, temps only drop 1-2c. So after a bit more tinkering with no results, I decide what the hell, let's see how high this thing will clock. Go to 2.6, idle temp holds steady, load temp is actually 1-2c cooler. Just bumped it up to 2.7 and temps are holding steady. Whats weird is when I run it bone stock, temps are 38-50. Any OC makes them jump to current level. I may try to flash back to the old BIOS just to see what happens. Current stats:

Opty 146 (ebay)
CABNYE 0540 FPMW
2.7 (10x270)
1.4v
HT 3x
133 mem divider
43 idle 53 load

Thanks for the encouragement about the CAB2E's. Just wish I had time to test them out. Honey do, kiddie stuff you know. Switch to irrationality now: I want my CABYE 0540!! Wah Monarch, when are you gonna ship my chip????? It's still at "sent to warehouse". You better not run out on me:|

I've already had 3800+ running at 2.65ghz, but I could not resist the temptation of o/cing 148 to 3ghz, so I placed an order with Monarch on Nov 30th. After waiting a shipping confirmation for 3 days, I got tired, lost my interest, and cancel the order.

Update : hmm, it's very odd. There's a guy who just received his 148 order on 12/1 from Monarch. There's something going on here.

That is indeed odd. Have you visited an MSI forum for board specific info. Sounds like a bios issue or b/o temp sensor. My bet is that the cpu is just fine as long as the correct voltage is feeding the cpu. I know on my DFI, there are points on the board to measure voltage with a DMM. Maybe someone with MSI know how can help you out. Thanks for getting back to us.....

I just got off the phone with my Mammee and she said it arrived about 15 minutes ago. I ordered a retail Socket 939 Opteron 148 from Monarch. I had her open the box and read what was printed on the chip through the plastic window.

CABYE 0540 FPBW

 w00t! I'm glad I started this thread! Thanks for the help guys! I probably would have ordered OEM if it weren't for some of the first couple of posts. I'm not going to be greedy; I'll probably just shoot for 11 x 250 = 2.750 since I'm a complete noobie overclocker.

So, is FPBW a good stepping? I know that the 0540 part is good, but what does the FPBW mean?

Oh no, rotten CABbaGE

Maybe if you hold onto it for two months it will eBay well to unsophisticated eBayers who heard lots of buzz about the Opterons but don't know enough to avoid the CABbaGE. You could just list it without mentioning the stepping.

Congrats WhipperSnapper on your processor, glad it worked out for you. I am in the same boat you are. I am a noob at overclocking but will be recieving the 148 retail from Monarch shortly. I have the same mobo as you and would be interested in any info you find on overclocking the 148 on the epox. Any tips would be appreciated by all.

Thanks

Vernon

Not sure when I'm going to build. I have all of the main components now but still need to decide on a heatsink, some case fans, a fan controller, and a couple other small knick-knacks. Should be up by the end of December. Now my biggest issue is the heatsink. Thermalright XP-90, XP-120, SI-120, or Scythe Ninja? (I can get the Ninja locally for $40.)

Well, people I'm the king of CAB2E's! Ordered 2 OEM 148 from Monarch (2 sep. orders), ordered 1 retail 148 from Monarch and 1 retail 148 from ZZF. Got the 2 retail cpu's today. 2 more frickin' CAB2E's. No more rainbow chasing for me. I'm gonna RMA the unopened ZZF cpu and sell one of the OEM's. Monarch has some lameass return policy of 5 days from date of delivery including weekends and holidays. Assuming it takes at least a day to get an RMA number, I'd basically have to Overfrickinnight the damn cpu to get it to them in time! RUSTLER, I should've listened to you.

On the other hand, I got my hands on a A8N32 sli deluxe from north of the border while others have gotten screwed by some the US retailers (i.e. charging cc then emailing people that the mobo is backordered).

FSH42NA sorry to hear that bro, that really sucks if you get 2700 or 2800 out of one of those CAB2E that ain't bad.
