With a DFI NF4 Ultra D and XP-90, my 165 only gets up to 2567 @ 1.45 volts. Seems like core 0 is the limiting factor because core 1 can run prime 95 at 2.7 ghz while core 0 will produce errors at 2600mhz. Is 2567 dual prime stable in the low end in terms of average oc potential of this chip. Every member here seems to be getting 2.7+ ghz.

very close to my overclock, although i get that using the stock cooler and 1.42v. but just like yours, i have a bad core. core 1 will only go higher with more volts, while core 0 can run prime 12hrs stable, stock volts @ 2.7. i can get 2664 @ 1.55v dual prime stable, but with the stock heatsink, temps approach 55c. looking to go water cooling @ 1.6v and try to hit 2.7-2.8

Well it all depends on your stepping. I got a similar setup to you. Most people can do 2.6 stock 2.7-2.8 needs some voltage adjustments. but 2.8 is max for my chip. im back down to 1.36volts@ 2.6 cpu temps are 25c idle 36@load on xp-90 untill i get a new chipset cooler because the cpu isnt getting too hot at 2.8 but my chipset is frying ...61c on load@2.8 So i ordered me a evercool vr-ce. A bit tweaking will get you 2.8.

2.8 GHz for me requires 1.375v (AFAIK, still in testing stages). 2.9 GHz was able to post into windows, but 3.0 GHz was no hope.

It depends on your stepping. The newer Opty's don't oc as well as older ones with better steppings. Also, oc'ing should always be considered a hit or miss type of thing. One chip may be a dud, another a monster. Too many variables to guarantee the same oc's as others.

I am a new newbie to overclocking, so please excuse me if my questions sound stupid.

I recently got a Opteron 165 and EPoX EP-9NPA3 Ultra. I followed the overclocking guide and overclocked my CPU to 2115Mhz (my ram won't pass memtest if HTT is higher than 235mhz, I think I can use memory divider, but I am still learning). I ran Prime 95 for 8 hours and the temperature was around 49C to 51C, idle was 40C. Is this a safe temperature range? (the CPU cooler is Zalman 7000CU).

Another thing that bothers me is in Speedfan. There are 4 readings, Temp1-4. I think Temp1 is CPU, because it changes when CPU is under load. Temp3 and Temp4 are always under 40C, I don't know what these are, one of them probably is motherboard temp. But Temp2, it always changes between 79C to 82C. It's hot, how do I find out what this is?

Thanks in advance.

The CPU temps are normal.
However, those 79C and 82C are pretty damn hot... Video card maybe? SLI? otherwise I have no idea... be careful.

Temp2 is that area next to your CPU with all thoe capacitators etc etc, you do NOT want it that hot. 55C is max for that area as well.

I got 2.73ghz @ 1.55v on my 165.

Thanks for all the replies.

But it looks like a tricky area to cool, so how can I cool that area directly? Will a case fan do it or do I need to swap the CPU cooler with Zalman 7700 (with 120mm fan)?

I've installed EPoX USDM. It shows my CPU is at 32C and system at 33C (idle), and CPU volt is at 1.40. I don't see that 80C anywhere.

When I open Speedfan, the 80C temp is still there. On the "Configure" screen, Temp1, Temp2, Temp3 are all on chip "F71812F". And it looks like Temp1 is CPU temp and Temp2 is system temp. Still don't know what the 80C Temp3 is.....

Here is a screenshot

Thanks.

Don't believe the hype!

Your OC is fine. Think about it. You have 2.55 with only 1.45 vCore. You can safely do a little more and probably get 2.6 or better. Now what would make you happy? 2.8 is only 200 MHz. Thats less than 10% difference, how noticeable do you think that would be, outside of a synthetic benchmark?

You just got 45% more CPU for free. Historically that would make most OCers crazy giddy.

And just like others have said, hardly anyone brags about a lousy OC, but most brag about a great OC so we get a distorted view. And its true lots of people are getting it with water or even chilled water or phase but are not saying.

I've had 4 165s 2 could only go to 2.4 or so. 1 maxed at 2.7 with 1.65v which made me nervouse, and then the keeper is the one I run now wich does 2.85 at 1.55vcore. These are all on air. SI-120 with a regular 120mm fan (80 cfm or so?)

SO it seems to me that the average is around 2.4 to 2.6 so you do NOT have a poor OCer, you just don't have a god chip either (like the ones that supposedly do 3+ GHz on air)

enjoy!

My 165 Opty seems dual prime stable at 1.375v (strange, I could've sworn I set it at 1.35 in the bios). But so far I've not managed to do 2.6Ghz even after more volts.
Plus, the temperature goes crazy with more volt: right now my load temperature is 50C (not awful, stock cooler). I tried as high as 1.525 in my attempt to get core 0 stable @ 2.6Ghz, but not only did it not work, but temperature was coming dangerously close to 60C.

What I've not figured out now is whether I can not hit 2.6Ghz because that is my limit of Core-0, or because the temperature is too high. I might increase my HTT 2mhz at a time up to 290 to see where exactly is my limit at 1.35-1.375v.
