Hi,

I have seen an offer in ebay for en opty 165 with two broken resistors/capacitors arrays around the core (the guy removed the IHS and broke them), anybody knows the exact value of these smd's and if the soldering is easy?. I have experience in soldering, but not with smd(surface mounted components).

please help

Does the CPU work? It could very well be broken, unsable or not overclock worth crap. It may whine, there are all kinds of problems this could cause...

Once the IHS is removed, all waranty goes kaput. The capacitors are absolutely tiny and I doubt you'd be able to re-solder them back.

I would stay away, FAR FAR away. The price may be right, but it's not worth it...

You'd have to have the hands of a master surgeon, the eyes of a hawk, and the patience/dedication of Brittany Spears to solder one of those things back on.

don't go for it. CPU's are made by machines cause the hands of us humans are unaccurate. i don't know where you could even get the right capacitors for the CPU. even if it's like $30, i don't think it worth your time. removing the IHS is the stupidest thing you can do.

stupider things:

sticking a metal object into a socket
jumping off the top of a building
standing in front of oncoming traffic
etc...

i've taken off the IHS before and it's not the stupidest thing i've done...

Shimmishim it should be noted that only those who feel they know what they are doing should attempt the IHS mod.

It's an option but I must desoldering another one to make a measure...

I have written to AMD but I don't think that they respond.

Of course not, it's classified information. That's like writing a letter to the NSA (or whatever) and asking for the name of one of their secret agents, and expecting to get it, too .

Surface mount devices are placed by machines and soldered in a bath. If you do manage to hand-solder a tiny SMD capacitor to the processor backplane... take pics, because it would be quite an achievement. Even if you do get the solder where it needs to be (underneath the ends of the part you are attaching, without bridging) chances are you'll fry the thing.

I think it is a capacitor bypass array. It is utilized to stabilize the power consumption and prevent or atenuate electrical peaks.

In order to take measures I will desolder one. I think in conductive glue to solder it back.

In low current circuits I think it will be ok, and actually that smd don't hold so much amperage.

If I recall correctly (I used to be in the pcb business a long time ago) they use a sort of sticky solder compound to mount the devices, and then heat it up to fuse it. That's sort of like conductive glue I guess. Might work as long as the resistance isn't too high.

Whats the stupidest thing you have done then?

OP - Show us a picture too Im interested in what it looks like, and unless AMD say otherwise i would avoid it. Unless your a collector, then it could be a real bargain.
